It’s time to pull out the sweater dresses! There is nothing better to wear once the temperatures start to dip than great sweater dresses. You can dress them up or keep them casual. Either way, they are a great way to stay cozy and look pulled together.
Sweater dresses can be tricky for petites unless we find true petite sizing. In this post, I will talk about how to look and feel great in a sweater dress and some of my favorite places to find them. How To Embrace Sweater Dresses As A Petite
Once the temperatures drop, it seems as if you see sweater dresses everywhere you look. They always look so good on the tall, thin models and then you try to translate that to your 5’4″ or under petite frame and just wonder how you are going to pull it off. Trust me, I have felt the same way.
The thought of a cozy sweater dress for comfort in the cooler months is something that I was determined that I was going to conquer. So I made up my mind that I would try, try, and try again until I figured out what worked for my petite frame. Hopefully, my process will also help you find the sweater dresses of your dreams. Oh, and I figured out the knee boot process too.
So let’s look at the process……
What To Look For In A Sweater Dresses As A Petite
There are three things that are important with sweater dresses. Fit, shape, and fabric weight/weave.
Sweater dresses are something that you don’t want too tight or too loose. Too tight and you will feel like you need to wear some sort of shapewear and that defeats the purpose of being cozy and comfortable. Too loose and it can make you look heavier than you really are. Something that none of us ever want.
Altering can be done, but it can be very expensive to hem/alter knitwear. My advice is to ask your trusted seamstress ahead of time how much the alteration is going to be. I have had the brown and black midi dresses taken in at the waist so that it gives them shape. That is not too difficult of an adjustment and makes a world of difference for me. Just as a side note, I have the waist taken in on 90+% of my things so I always add that into the cost of the garment.
If you are good at doing alterations and want to give it a try, here’s a good tutorial. Might come in handy for sweater sleeves too.
So many of the dresses that we see on the tall models have no shape to them. Doesn’t work on my body and most likely doesn’t flatter your petite frame either. When you are petite it is best to accentuate your waistline. If you can find a sweater dress with a vneck you have hit the jackpot.
Most likely you want something with a higher neckline since we are wearing sweater dresses when it is cold outside. My suggestion is to go for a round neck or mock neck and then add a scarf or a necklace to create the “V”.
Fabric Weight and Weave
Again, those thick chunky sweaters look so good on the tall models. Bulk is not necessarily what is going to look good on our shorter frames.
I look for sweater dresses that will be warm, but not thick, chunky knits. Check the fabric content and make sure it has some wool in it. If you want really warm, then look for a cashmere dress. There is nothing cozier than a soft cashmere and the weave is typically done so that it is not so heavy and thick.
If you can find a ribbed knit that is a vertical pattern, then you have found another jackpot. Vertical “stripes” are always an illusion of height for petites.
Sweater Dress Styles That Look Great On Petites
Over the years I have found three styles of sweater dresses that work for my petite frame and for petites in general.
Fit and Flare
A fit-and-flare dress is great for petites. It defines our waist and highlights our curves in a flattering way. Plus the fuller skirt is comfortable and fun to wear. Who doesn’t like to sashay around in a pretty skirt no matter our age? Another great neckline to look for is a boat neck. This is a great fit and flare with a boat neck.
Sheath dresses are very flattering, versatile and timeless. Every woman should have a great sweater dress that is a sheath. Once you find one that fits your body, especially a black one, you will have it for many years to come. Many times this style of dress can be shorter so you can find petite-friendly options so that you are comfortable with the length of the dress.
I like to pair a sheath dress with tights and boots for a timeless look. Invest in a good quality sheath dress and you will have it for many years to come. You can wear them casually or dressed up. Just change up your accessories and you are good to go.
Yes, petite ladies we CAN wear midi dresses and look taller. Midi skirts too. We just have to make sure that we are in a monochrome look. A column of color like I did above or a light to dark look will also give you (look at the brown dress with the olive boots above). Just make sure your midi dress hits at mid calf or just under the thickest part of your calf. That will make it so that the dress doesn’t make your legs look shorter or cut at an odd part. The fact that the dress is ribbed in a vertical pattern also helps elongate the body.
It is also best to pair this length of dress with heels. Even if it is just a kitten heel it will help to make your legs look longer and add a little height. The neckline on this midi dress also helps to draw the attention of others up to your face. Another little trick that works every time for petites.
