How To Look Better In Your 50s And Beyond
Age is just a number, right? They now say that 50 is the new 30, 60 is the new 40, etc. Thanks to so many scientific and health practices we are living better and longer lives. Now we need to make sure that we know little things we can do to look better in our 50s and beyond.
I think back to what a therapist told me several years ago. Her mission was to work with women and help them figure out some things in their lives to make them feel better about themselves. She shared with me that most of her clients came into their own in their late 40s and early 50s. She also explained that this is a time in our lives when we can treat ourselves to more me time and to things that bring us joy. So, here are a few things I have learned along the way to ensure I feel better and look better in midlife and beyond.

Let’s Look Better In Our 50s and Beyond With Healthy Habits
Tips To Have You Feeling Fabulous Over 50
Prioritize Sleep

One of the good things about growing older gracefully is that we can set our bedtimes. Feel like going to bed right after dinner because you have had a long day or week? Don’t feel guilty. Just listen to your body.
There is a reason that they refer to it as “beauty rest”. If we are not getting enough quality sleep it affects not only our appearances, but how our body works. When we sleep it gives our bodies time to repair itself. After all, our skin is our largest organ and that is where we can start to show signs of aging. So getting good zzz’s helps with the appearance of your skin.
If you have trouble getting good quality sleep come up with a couple of nighttime winddown routines. Find something that calms and relaxes you before you go to bed so that you can fall asleep quickly. Here are a few things you can do. Do one or a few combined.
- Have a cup of herbal tea
- Light a candle and take a hot bath
- Read a book
- Stretch (my favorite right before bed)
- Meditate (another favorite, I use the Headspace app)
One or more of these activities will tell your brain that it is time to relax and renew for a great day the next day.
Reduce Toxins In Your Diet and Environment
Toxins can take a toll on our skin and hair. Try to avoid as many of them as you can. The sun is probably the biggest culprit. Sunscreen should be a part of your daily skincare routine rain or shine. If you choose to be out in the sun or have to be out in the sun, make sure you are using a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Even better if you can wear UPF50 fabric clothing.
Avoiding smoke and secondhand smoke whenever possible is another biggie. It can also wreak havoc on our skin. Thankfully most public places are now smoke-free.
Of course, we have to mention the food and beverage toxins. Why is it that so many tasty things are bad for us? Alcohol, sugar, caffeine, and trans fats are all so tasty, but not the best things to keep us looking young. Avoid them when you can or at least make sure you enjoy them in moderation.
Move Your Body
Moving our bodies is not only good for our bodies, but also for our minds. Everyone’s definition of “moving their body regularly” is different. You can see varying recommendations, but I think this one is a good rule of thumb. The important part is that you find something that you enjoy doing so that you look forward to moving your body.
I recently came across the cutest article on making “silly” fitness goals. If you know you need to increase the length of your walk or bike ride come up with a “silly” goal. Something like I will walk in my neighborhood until I see three cute dogs. If you need to make the time pass, turn on an audiobook while you walk and set a goal of finishing X amount of time or chapters.
Not only will moving your body regularly make you feel better, but you will look better in your 50s if you work to maintain your muscle mass. Muscle mass is so important for us to maintain. If you can put on muscle mass in your 50s even better. Who wants to have to worry about osteoporosis? Let’s try our best to prevent it.
Take a Look At Your Look

How long has it been since you modified your look? By your “look” I mean your hair and makeup routine. As we age our skin and hair change. Some of us choose to embrace the greys while others do not. I am one who does not embrace the greys, at least not yet.
Talk with your stylist about your hair color, do you need to go a little lighter or add some highlights to soften the color around your face? Our skin tone changes so we may need to lighten our color so that it doesn’t look so harsh.
When was the last time you changed foundations? As our skin ages, the type of coverage that we need changes. There are so many good foundations out there that it can be overwhelming. What works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. My suggestion is that you go into a Sephora or a major department store and chat with someone close to your age if you can find that. I wouldn’t buy a new foundation immediately. I would try again another day or go to another store. Get a couple of opinions. Many times they can offer some great advice.
I will confess that I only talk to one lady at my local Sephora. She is a trained makeup artist in her 40s. I go in and ask her all sorts of questions. I go home, do my research, look at reviews, and then I make my purchases. Find the products that work for you so that you and your skin look better in your 50s and beyond.
Check In On Your Style Objectively
Ok, let’s be honest about this. When was the last time that you did a deep dive into your closet? That means trying on everything to see if it fits. If it doesn’t fit and is still stylish, can it be altered? If not, let someone else enjoy it. Ladies, fit is everything as we age. If a garment doesn’t fit properly it can make us look heavier or thinner. Either way is not good for aging us.
By now, we should know our personal style. That doesn’t mean that you can’t experiment with new styles and colors. Actually, that is a good thing and will keep you from looking older and frumpier. One of the most impactful changes I’ve made recently is having my colors professionally analyzed, which you can read more about in my full guide to color analysis in your 50s.
We no longer need to chase the latest trends. Yes, it is good to keep up with them so that you don’t look dated. However, you don’t have to embrace the latest trends and colors if they don’t look good on you. Invest in the best clothing that you can for your budget. Find good classic wardrobe investment pieces you will wear on repeat on sale or at consignment shops. Having those flattering pieces will make you look and feel better every time you go to get dressed.
Our goal is to always look better in our 50s, not just good.
