It’s almost the “most wonderful time of year”. The holiday season is soon approaching, so now is the time to plan some fun holiday date outings. My husband and I have lived in Atlanta for over 30 years now, and these are some of our favorite things to do each holiday season. We have learned that we can’t do ALL of the fun things that spark holiday joy every year, so we have a bit of a rotation.

This list of things to do includes gardens with dazzling light displays, concerts, and festive fun. There is something for everyone on the list. So check it twice and find something new and fun to plan for the holiday season. We are a childfree couple, so that is why some of these outings are special to us.

Before I share some of our favorite holiday date outings, here are a few other posts you might want to check out.

Memorable Holiday Date Ideas: Gardens, Concerts, and Festive Fun

We may be in the South, but Atlanta transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. There are endless festive activities for couples who want to make special holiday memories together. I promise there is something for everyone.

Over the years, my husband and I have curated a list of things that spark holiday joy for us. We have a bit of a rotation and then also like to add in a new one every once in a while. Variety is the spice of life after all. Here is a curated list of the best holiday things to do in Atlanta for couples.

Fun Outings To Make Holiday Memories

It’s time to get out the calendar, check your schedule, and order some tickets. So many of the venues sell out early. I know it’s hard to think about it in October, but if you don’t check it twice, you might miss the opportunity to make some lasting memories this holiday season.

Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Holiday Lights

Few places in Atlanta capture the holiday magic like the Atlanta Botanical Garden during its “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights event. This seasonal display is a perfect night out for couples. It offers breathtaking light installations that blanket the gardens in a warm, festive glow. The garden lights are a perfect backdrop for holiday photos, so consider this an ideal romantic date to kick off the season.

For couples, I would suggest going on a “school night”. Yes, Sunday through Thursday might be better for a romantic outing. On the weekends, you will find many families enjoying the displays. Also, we like to book an early tour so that way you can plan for dinner out afterwards. Tickets are by date and time so make sure you book early via their website.

Candlelight Concerts

This is a new holiday date for us this year, and I can’t wait. There is nothing like a candlelit concert in a beautiful Atlanta venue. Candlelight Concerts offer a unique way to experience your favorite holiday classics in an intimate, romantic setting. I can’t wait to be surrounded by hundreds of flickering candles while listening to a string quartet perform Christmas classics and winter melodies.

All of the Candlelight Concerts are held at unique locations such as historic churches and theaters. Performances are only an hour, so you can plan dinner out before or after. Make sure you book tickets early since all of the concerts are in small venues.

If you are attending a stadium concert, I shared here how to pack your stadium bag.

A Christmas Carol at the Alliance Theatre

The story of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol evokes the holiday spirit more than any other story. The Alliance Theatre brings this timeless classic to life each year. The performance is beautifully staged and always includes a talented cast. Since we have seen this show many times over the years, it is part of our rotation. I will say that the Alliance does change things up a bit every so many years, so it is always fresh.

This holiday show is a holiday tradition for many Atlantans. It is a great way to experience local culture and the holiday spirit as a couple. Again, this is a small venue, so get your tickets early in the season.

Catch a Show at Byers Theatre

The Byers Theatre is located in Sandy Springs and is a newer venue in Atlanta, and to us. Since we live in the northern suburb,s this is a new favorite year-round, not just the holidays.

The theater hosts a variety of performances during the holidays, from musical performances to holiday-themed plays. It is a cozier atmosphere, which makes it a great setting for date nights. There is no bad seat in the house. Check their schedule to see what holiday performances are lined up for the season. They do change every year.

Christmas Show at The Strand Theatre in Marietta

The historic Strand Theatre in Marietta offers a nostalgic holiday experience. This annual performance is a staple in the holiday calendar for many couples. It’s a treat just to visit this historic theater that was built in 1935. The venue is stunning and filled with vintage charm, so it is ideal for a romantic holiday date. Make sure you check out their lineup starting in November. Not only do they offer the Christmas Spectacular, but they also show many holiday classic movies that you will enjoy.

Also, the Marietta Square is beautifully decorated at this time. You can stroll around the square, enjoy a nice dinner or cocktails, and soak in the twinkling lights before or after the show.

Ice Skating at Ponce City Market’s Rooftop

If you are looking for a date night with a light bit more adventure, then Ice Skating at the Ponce City Market Rooftop Sky Rink needs to be on your list. It is an ice skating experience with stunning views of the Atlanta skyline. This is a one-of-a-kind holiday activity for couples.

The rink is open-air, so make sure you dress accordingly. You will want to explore the rooftop’s amusement park-style games or grab a warm drink. Ponce City Market is beautifully decorated during the holiday, so make sure you wander around and enjoy the atmosphere.

The Grinch Pop-Up Bar at Mercantile Social

If you are a fan of the Grinch like me, then this Alpharetta spot is a must. Mercantile Social offers a fun, festive twist for a holiday outing with a Grinch-themed pop-up bar. This themed bar offers unique holiday cocktails, playful decor, and a lively atmosphere.

Mercantile Social knows how to keep things playful and merry with their Grinch-inspired cocktails, fun decor, and Grinchy surprises. It is an ideal stop after a day of shopping or for cocktails after dinner at one of the many downtown Alpharetta restaurants. We like to go early in the evening on weekends because the venue gets quite crowded.

You can also make a full evening of it by strolling around the Downtown Alpharetta area afterward. The town always has a beautifully lit Christmas tree, and there’s usually a spot nearby with live music that adds to the festive atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to linger a little longer and soak in all of the holiday magic before heading home.

Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Resort & Gardens (Pine Mountain, GA)

If you are in the mood for a magical night away, Callaway’s Fantasy In Lights has been a favorite holiday road trip for years. The 7-mile drive-through display features millions of twinkling lights, whimsical scenes, and that nostalgic holiday feeling you get when you are bundled up in the car with someone special. After the lights, you can stroll through the Christmas Village for hot chocolate, festive treats, a little holiday shopping, and photos. It is an easy 1.5-hour drive from Atlanta and is always worth the trip. You can also easily make this a full getaway by booking a stay at the Gardens’ Lodge.

Tickets for this often sell out early, so plan ahead if you are going on a weekend or around holiday weeks.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Holiday Ride (Blue Ridge, GA)

If you are looking for a cozy, small-town holiday date idea, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is such a fun escape. The Holiday Express train winds along the Toccoa River with festive music, lights, and a little extra holiday cheer. It is a simple, scenic ride that feels like stepping into a Christmas movie.
