What To Wear To A Dinner Party
When it comes to figuring out what to wear to a dinner party, the options can feel endless. The key is knowing how to strike the right balance between your personal style and comfort. You want to feel confident no matter the setting. Before we get into specific outfit ideas, le’ts look at a few tips for choosing the right dinner party outfit every time.
How To Choose Dinner Party Outfits
It always helps to think about a few basics that can guide your choices when planning an outfit. Every dinner party is a bit different, so paying attention to the dress code, the setting, and even the season can make getting dressed so much easier. Keeping details like this in mind ensures that you will look stylish and feel comfortable all evening no mater the invitation.
Dress Code Clues
The first thing to look at when an invitation arrives is dress code clues. Many times there will be a section or sentence that will suggest whether the suggested dress is casual, smart casual, cocktail, or formal.
Setting and Vibe
The next clue for how you should dress for a dinner party is where it’s going to be held. Is it at a friend’s home with a few close friends verus a restaurant versus a formal private dining event.
Comfort
You want to enjoy your dinner and not fuss with your outfit. Make sure you wear something that isn’t too tight or binding in the midsection. A neckline that you don’t worry about spilling something on is another thing that I always consider.
Seasonal fabrics
You will want to wear seasonal fabrics. For fall and winter consider knits, velvet, leather, and wool blends. Layer if possible so that you can adjust if the setting is warmer or cooler than you expected.
For spring and summer you will want to consider cottons and linens.
Footwear
Even though it is a dinner party and you will be sitting most of the evening you want your footwear to be stylish and practical for cooler temperatures. So consider block heel pumps/boots, flats, or even loafers. When I am in someone’s home I avoid wearing stiletto style shoes especially if they have hardwoods everywhere in their home.
How To Dress For A Dinner Party
Now that we have the basics in mind, let’s put them into some real outfit inspiration. I’ve pulled together five different looks that work beautifully for fall and winter dinner parties, no matter the dress code.
Casual Dinner Party
A casual dinner with close friends is the perfect excuse to keep things easygoing while still looking pulled together. You want to feel relaxed enough to put your feet up by the fireplace, but polished enough that you don’t look like you just finished running errands. That is where an elevated casual look comes in.
I find that a great fitting pair of straight leg jeans paired with a slim-fit cashmere or merino wool sweater with loafers strikes that balance. You can add a tailored blazer or moto jacket if you need another layer.

This type of look feels effortless but does show that you put a little thought into it. It is perfect for sitting around the table laughing with your friend.
Dinner Out At A Trendy Restaurant
Heading to a great restaurant for a dinner party. Is the restaurant new and buzzworthy? If so, it call for something a little more fashion-forward. We want to add a little edge so that you feel like you belong in the best table in the corner of the dining room. We are going for a look that is the perfect balance between trendy and timeless. You might want to consider a monochromatic look with pants like I am suggesting and that works too. Check out my tips for monochromatic dressing so that you still have a chic look for your evening.

This look feels a bit fashion-forward but still approachable. You’ll be photo-ready with all of your friends.
Smart Casual Dinner Party
When the invitation says “smart casual” I always let out a sigh. This can be one of the trickiest dress codes to navigate. You don’t want to be overdressed, but you don’t want to be underdressed. That’s why I always like to step it up a bit and wear a midi skirt. It is a polished, yet approachable oufit for many occasions. This could work for a dinner with friends in the fall or even a work dinner party.

This look strikes that sweet spot between relaxed and dressed up. You will be comfortable yet polished for the entire evening.
Cocktail Attire Dinner Party
Cocktail attire instantly signals that the evening will be a little more special. That means the outfit needs to be a little more special and thought out. It is your chance to lean into some rich fabrics, details, and maybe even a little sparkle. You might want to add a pair of sheer black tights if it is chilly outside. This outfit idea will help you look festive without going over the top. This would be appropriate for a work or even a holiday party.

This kind of look ensures that you feel sopisticated and classy, yet comfortable enough to enjoy every course.
Formal Dinner Party
For a formal dinner party, it is all about elegance and refinement. Many of them can be black tie or black tie optional so that means we are going for a sophiticated look that will still let you enjoy the evening. This outfit will give you a polished finish that stands out for all the right reasons. For special occations like this you want to make sure you find the perfect bra for you and your outfit. The right undergarments can make or break your look.
If you don’t want to wear a full-length gown, I would suggest something like this metallic shirtdress with a pair of gold sandals. Winter white and gold is always oh so chic.
