Bra Shopping

Going into any lingerie department can be daunting. So many options. The question is what do you really need. What is today’s shopping mission? Some helpful things to think through before you start trying on:

  • Is this for everyday wear and comfort?
  • Do I prefer a solid fabric or a tone on tone pattern?
  • Does lace work under the fabrics I usually wear?
  • What color(s) do I need?

I recommend finding someone that truly works in the department to help you. Most large department stores will have an educated staff. Finding the right bra for our midlife bodies takes a little more knowledge and effort that when everything was perky in our 20s. Another tip is to wear a t-shirt on the day that you are on your bra finding mission. It will help you determine if you like the way everything looks under a tighter fitting article of clothing that isn’t necessarily a thick fabric.

If you haven’t been fitted in the last 6 months, then I would recommend that you ask to be fitted before you start trying things on. You can also measure for yourself at home with these tips if you need to shop online.

Breasts Come in Different Shapes and Sizes

Just like our bodies as a whole, our breast are different shapes and sizes. There are several factors that can help determine the shape of our breasts. They include

  • Genetics
  • Your weight
  • Your workout routine
  • Your age
  • Pregnancy and postpartum

Once you find that, then you feel so good and confident in your clothes. So remember when you are shopping try on as many styles of bras that you can. That way you will find one you feel that makes your breast look and feel the way you want. An experience bra fitter will be able to guide you to the best style of bra for your breast shape.

Styles of Bras

There are basic styles of bras. It’s always good to know what you prefer from past experiences. However, if you breast have changed you might ask for some guidance from your bra fitter. Types of Bra Closures

Most of us have always worn the traditional rear closing bras. I know that I have and still do. The main reason for me is that I am a busty petite and the options out there for us are not as numerous. You can ready about how to find the best bra if you are a busty petite here.

Here are other closure options out there to consider if they come in your size.

Front Closures

If you are starting to have mobility issues, then you might want to try front closure bras. They make them with hook and eyes, specialty clasps, and even zippers.

Overhead Closures

Most bras that you pull over your head are compression bras/sports bras. Honestly, I am not a fan of them even for sports bras. Not the easiest thing to get in and out of. You can read about my favorite, supportive sports bras in this post.

I know my preferences have changed. I can’t handle the traditional bras anymore. I remember a friend telling me that once and I didn’t understand it until I tried the kind of bra that has a wide expanse of material in the back so it doesn’t constrict by the end of the day.
Now I’m a happy camper, LOL
