What To Do On Mental Health Day: Simple Ways To Recharge Your Mind and Body
Life can feel like a constant juggling act. Work, relationships, responsibilities, and everything in between is a lot to juggle. It is easy to let our own well-being fall to the bottom of the list. But taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physcial health. That’s why I love the reminder the World Mental Health Day brings each year.
In this post, I’m sharing what World Mental Health Day is all about, why it’s perfectly OK (and necessary!) to take a mental health day anytime you need one, and a few ideas to help you recharge and reset. Remember this, we all deserve that pause button every now and then.

What To Do On A Mental Health Day
Taking a day just for yourself can do wonders for your mind and body. In this post, I am sharing ideas for what to do on a Mental Health Day. Some simple ways to rest, recharge, and reset so you can show up as the best version of you. I like to call mine a “Beth Day”, a day where I focus on whatever fills my cup and helps me feel grounded again. Think of it as a great way to use one of those personal days that are part of your PTO.
When Is World Mental Health Day?
World Mental Health Day is observed every year on October 10th. It is a global day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting positive well-being for everyone. This day was started by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992 and each year it continues on its mission to raise awareness about mental health challenges and issues.
It’s the perfect reminder that taking care of your mind is something to celebrate, not something to feel guilty about. Whether you recognize it through quiet time alone or by doing something that brings you joy, it is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on how well you are really doing.
Is it OK to Take A Mental Health Day
YES, absolutely. It is more than OK to take a mental health day. Taking a mental health day is not a sign of weakness. It is an act of self-awareness and self-care. Life gets busy, and sometimes your body and mind simply need a break. Think of this as a sick day for your overall health.
You don’t have to wait for World Mental Health Day to give yourself permission to rest. A mental health day can help you reset your mood, gain perspective, and come back to your everyday life with more energy and clarity. This of it like hitting the refresh button for your mind.
Planning a mental health day is always a good idea. You don’t want to wait until you are feeling overwhelmed or burnout hits you, you want to do this for YOU before you get to that point.
Why are Mental Health Days Important
We schedule doctor visitis, hair appointments, workout classes, and other appointments to take care of our physical self, but rarely schedule downtime to nurture our minds. Taking regular mental health days helps you manage stress, improve emotional balance, and prevent long-term burnout. Don’t have a full day? That’s OK, carve out a few hours for YOU time. There are so many benefits of mental health days whether they are a single day or just a few hours.
Here are four key reasons why they matter:
Help Reduce Stress and Prevent Burnout
Constant busyness can take a toll on your mental and physical health. A mental health day lets you step back and decompress before stress builds up too much.
Boost Productivity and Creativity
Sometimes stepping away from your routine gives your brain the breathing room it needs to problem-solve and think creatively again.
Improve Emotional Awareness
When you slow down, you can check in with yourself. You have time to recognize how you are feeling, what is draining you, and what brings you joy. That awareness helps you make better choices moving forward.
Reinforce Healthy Boundaries
Taking time for yourself reminds you (and others in your life) that your well-being matters. It is a powerful way to set healthy boundaries in your personal and professional life.

What To Do On A Mental Health Day
Taking a mental health day is all about giving yourself permission to slow down and focus on what truly restores your energy. There is no right or wrong way to spend the day. The goal is to do things that help you feel calm, present, and refreshed. Whether you have a full day or just a few hours, these ideas can help you make the most of your “YOU” time.
Get Outside in Nature
There is something incredibly grounding about spending time in nature with fresh air and natural light. Take a walk in your neighborhood, visit a nearby park, or plan a short hike if you have time. Spending time in nature reduces stress, boosts your mood, and help you reconnect with the world beyond your to-do list. Even 15-20 minutes of outdoor time can make a big difference in how you feel.
Unplug from Technology
We all need a break from the constant pings and scrolling. Try putting your phone on “Do Not Disturb”, stepping away from social media, and giving your mind space to breath. A few tech-free hours can help you feel calmer, more present, and more in tune with your own thoughts.
Move your body (gently)
Exercise doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. A yoga class, stretching session, or even a slow walk around your block can release endorphins and ease anxiety. If you prefer something cozy, put on soft music and stretch at home. Gentle movement helps relieve tension and reminds your body that it is being cared for in a loving way.
Treat Yourself To Something Soothing
Mental health days are focused on self-care that is indulgent. Take a long bath with your favorite candle burning, book a massage, or enjoy a slow morning coffee without rushing. Doing something that feels nurturing sends a message to your mind that rest and pleasure are just as productive as work.
Journal or Reflect
Journaling can be a great way to process emotions and check in with yourself. Write about what’s been on your mind lately…..the good, the stressful, or even the uncertain. You can do this at home, in a cozy corner at a coffee shop, or outside in the sunshine. Getting your thoughts on paper can help you feel lighter and more centered.
Connect with Someone Who Lifts You Up
Sometimes the best therapy is time spent with someone who just gets you. Call a trusted friend, meet for luch, or take a walk together. Positive connection reminds you that you are not alone. This is a simple but powerful mood booster for your mental well being.
No matter which of these ideas you choose, the most important thing is that you make the time for YOU. A mental health day doesn’t have to be complicated or perfectly planned. It just needs to help you feel restored, balanced, and ready to take on life again. So go ahead and schedule that “Beth Day”. You will be amazed at how much better you feel when you make yourself a priority.
