How To Wear A Midi Skirt And Look Taller If You Are Petite

So many times as petite women we are hesitant to wear certain styles because they can make us look shorter. For those of us who are 5’4″ and under that is the LAST thing that we want. Embrace The Midi Skirt As A Petite
Not every petite woman likes to show their legs. Thus, a skirt that is above the knee or a mini skirt is not in the cards. The midi skirt is the answer to having skirts in your closet. Many brands actually make them in petite sizing so that should tell us that we can wear this style. There may be certain styles that look better on your body type than others. That’s where you will just need to experiment with what you feel most comfortable in.
Where The Hemline Should Hit On A Petite Body
Ahhh. The hemline question. A midi skirt can hit anywhere from just below the knee to just above the ankles. Each of us has a unique body and a spot where things look best on us. However, what looks best on most women is just below the knee or just below the widest part of your calf.
If you are unsure about which length looks best on you, then this is where a good seamstress comes in. Take your skirt and shoes you will wear with it on your visit so that they can mark it for you to see.
Midi Skirt Styles
There are several styles of midi skirts for petites. Depending upon your body type you can find one that flatters your figure and enjoy wearing. Below are probably the most common styles of skirts that you can easily find.
A-LIne
A-line skirts are designed to flare out from the waist. They will help draw attention to the waistline so they work well on hourglass or pear-shaped bodies. Depending upon your body type this skirt style looks good on petite bodies just below the knee or mid calf.
This style of skirt can be dressed up for the office, an evening out, or worn casually depending upon the skirt. One of the denim trends that you have been seeing is an aline skirt. This petite-sized denim skirt would be great to wear year-round.
Pleated Skirts
Pleated skirts tend to have a lot of volume to them. Thus an inverted triangle body shape can wear this style of skirt so well. That means you usually take a larger top size than bottom.
If you can find one without a lot of volume, they could work well for a rectangular body type. You can add some volume to your lower half and look good.
Straight or Pencil Skirt
The pencil skirt is one of the most versatile skirts around. This style can be so casual and oh so dressy depending upon the fabric. There is nothing like a great black pencil skirt in my opinion. You can get them in so many fabric types. In the cooler month a love a good knit skirt.
Skirt With A Slit
A midi skirt with a slit not only shows a little leg to make us look taller, but it also help draw the eye up at the same time. When I think of this style of skirt the company that comes to mind is Reformation. They always have a midi skirt with a slit year-round in multiple fabric choices. This black version is a must have if you like to wear this style of skirt.
Satin or Silk Skirt
The satin or silk midi skirt is a closet staple. These are usually straight or pencil skirt. Sometimes they will have a little flare at the bottom. Many times they are referred to as a slip skirt.
These can be worn year-round. They work just as well with a pair of sandals as they do with a great pair of boots in the winter.
5 Tips For Not Looking Frumpy In A Midi Skirt
- Always accentuate your waist. Look for a high waisted skirt and make sure that if fits your body well. This will give the illusion of longer legs.
- Add some height. Midi skirts will always look better if you have a little bit of a heel. If you are opting for sneakers, then wear one with a platform.
- Avoid oversized tops. You are going to want to tuck your top into every style of midi skirt. A fitted top will always help balance this out.
- Wear monochrome or light to dark. This is a trick that applies to all types of outfits for petites.
- The size of pattern or print. Yes, you can wear a pattern or print when it comes to skirts. Just keep in mind the scale of the print and the direction. Vertical prints are a petite woman’s BFF.
