Best Summer Handbags For 2025
The saying goes that your handbag and shoes can make or break an outfit. So many of our summer outfits are simple. Our main goal in the summer months is to look put together, but at the same time, we are trying to stay cool. Therefore, having a great handbag that can elevate your simple outfits is a must. If you’re looking for shoes to complement your handbags, consider exploring the best shoe styles for petite women.
You don’t have to have a huge handbag collection to do this. You can strategically add a classic handbag that will last you many summers. If you make sure that you have one that you truly love from each of the styles below, you will always have a handbag that elevates your OOTD.
What Makes A Great Summer Handbag?
First and foremost, we want our handbags to be functional. It needs to hold our essentials. Yes, each of us has a different definition of what is essential. However, all of our handbags need to be able to accommodate a small wallet, our keys, a lipstick for touchups, and sunglasses.
Next, we want to make sure that our handbags are seasonally aesthetic. The clothing we wear in the summer months is lighter and many times brighter, so our handbags need to follow suit. You will want to look for straw, raffia, canvas, and soft leathers. The colors you want to look for are white, tan, pastels, bright pops of color, and natural textures.
The Best Summer Hangbag Styles
Straw or Woven Handbags

A great straw or woven handbag is a must for summer. They are perfect for casual looks, brunch, beach days, and vacation looks. When you invest in a quality straw or woven handbag, you will have it for many years. You will reach for it regularly from May to August, and then it will take a vacation from your rotation.
There are a few brands that immediately come to mind when I think of quality straw/raffia bags in timeless designs…..Eric Javitz, Sezane, and J.Crew. All are different price points, but you will be able to find a style and size that suits your petite frame from these brands. Also, you know that when you pull the bag out in a few years, it will still look current. Here are some of my favorites from these brands.
Crossbody Bags

A crossbody bag is great for everyday casual style, errand days, and travel. Crossbody bags are great when you need to be hands-free. That is why they are so good when you are traveling. Think zipper top for extra safety.
You can always find them in various shapes and sizes, so they don’t overpower your petite frame. For summer, add a crossbody bag that is a pretty, soft color like blush pink, sage, or a light blue. Whatever color palette looks best on you.
If you are looking for a white bag that would be great for travel, this nylon camera bag fits the bill. This soft, pebbled leather bag is the perfect pop of soft pink. If you want a lightweight crochet bag full of soft summer colors, then this one is for you. Another option I always like for summer is a two-tone bag. White with a touch of cognac is always a classic, and this bag can be carried as a top handle or worn as a crossbody.
Canvas Totes or Market Bags

I am a strong believer in tote bags. I keep a canvas tote bag from Lands’ End in my car at all times for errand days. You never know when one is going to come in handy. They are also good to have for trips to the farmer’s market. Here’s why I love the Lands’ End tote so much. It comes in three sizes, multiple color combinations, has pockets on the inside and one on the outside, and you can get it monogrammed. The larger size is great for beach trips or pool days when you need more room. Oh, and you can also get one with a zipper top.
If you need a classic and classy, packable tote for beach travel, then this Eric Javitz bag is for you. It also has a coordinating UPF50 packable hat. Yes, they are a bit of an investment. However, they are classics that have been around for years and will look fabulous for years to come when you are traveling.
Want something waterproof that you can hose down? A Bogg bag is for you. It also comes in a larger size that is great for the beach.
Clutch or Wristlet

A versatile summer clutch or wristlet is a must for patio dinners, summer weddings, or evenings out. Many will have a shoulder strap that you can tuck into the bag. A good feature to look for it you are going to summer soirees where you will be standing much of the time.
When it comes to this type of summer handbag, you want to choose something that has texture. So look for woven, beaded, or metallic options. You can keep it neutral or go for color. Depends upon which will go better with your summer wardrobe.
If you have several summer plans where you need a lovely wristlet, this bag is so beautiful and comes in 20+ color and texture options. This pleated metallic bag is another stunner that comes in a few color options. Another option is always a pretty minaudiere, and Pamela Munson has some stunners. The Pearl is such a classic and so sophisticated for a rattan handbag.
Colorful Shoulder Bag
A colorful shoulder bag is a great way to add a statement to a simple summer outfit. Many times we grativate to all white outfits or to sundresses that have a pattern on them. Either way, a colorful handbag is a nice addition. When it comes to sizing for petites, a medium sized bag can almost be like a large or oversized bag. This size of bag will work well for day to night.
For summer, you want a color that feels fresh and bold. Think red, coral, yellow, orange, or turquoise. Pair your colorful handbag with a pair of neutral shoes. Don’t worry about being matchy-matchy with this type of look. Have fun with it. As you can see, it is the only handbag category I don’t have a photo for. Guess I need to add this one to my list for the season. Here are some that I would consider adding. I know that they colors will work summer after summer and they are classic handbag shapes/styles.
Tips for Petites Choosing Summer HandBags
All the bags I have featured in today’s post are bags I would carry as a petite woman. I am 5′ tall and wear a size 0-2, so I am always keeping handbag size and proportion in mind. Here are three things that I am always mindful of when choosing a new handbag to add to my closet.
- The handbag complements my petite frame and doesn’t compete with it.
- I look for adjustable straps on crossbody bags. If not I make sure that they hit at the waist.
- Structured styles are a petite woman’s friend. They keep our outfit looking polished and balanced.
The goal is to find handbags that are simple designs you can carry and enjoy for years. Yes, to handbags that have a refined simplicity because they work for petites.
