7 Benefits of Drinking from Stainless Steel or Glass

I have a little confession to make. I purged my kitchen of plastic drinkware a few years ago. Not only did I get rid of the glasses, but I also purged all of the plastic storage containers. Now when you see me drinking something it is usually out of stainless steel or glass.

I know that most people are thinking that I made the switch because of all of the landfill issues and how long it takes for plastic to break down. Yes, I am a recycler and keep that in mind. However, there were health reasons that prompted the switch. Now I only drink out of plastic on very rare occasions.

Why I Made the Switch

A blood test at my annual physical prompted this purge from the kitchen. A few years ago we were testing my hormones because I was having all sorts of sleep issues. Of course, my age and the big menopause word came up too. The doctor called to let me know that my E3 levels were elevated. My first questions was. What is E3?

Apparently, we have three types of estrogen and E3 is one of them. I won’t digress into that, but what I will say is I learned a lot about E3 because you don’t want high levels of it in your body. Here is a great summary about what to look for in your E3 levels.

In a nutshell, you have a greater risk of certain types of cancers if your E3 levels are too high. Well, just the thought of that made me ask what I needed to do to lower them.

How I Lowered My E3 levels

The doctor knew that I ate a gluten free, dairy free, and soy free diet. My body fat is always on the low end of normal so there were only three things that she wanted me to do.

  • Drink only out of stainless steel or glass
  • Store foods in glass when possible
  • Eat more cruciferous vegetables

That is when the purge in my kitchen cabinets took place. Not that I drank out of plastic a lot, but I made sure that if I was drinking something when I was at home it was definitely out of stainless steel or glass. I pulled up a list of the healthiest cruciferous vegetables like this one and made sure they were on my grocery list and menu every week.

We retested my blood levels in six months and all was in the normal range and has stayed that way ever since. Something to celebrate.

Good Things that Came from the Switch

First of all, it was quite easy to make this switch. There are so many options out there these days for stainless steel bottles. They come in all shapes, sizes and, decorative patterns on the outside. I drink LOTS of water every day, 365 days a year and one is always with me when I am on the go. Then nice thing is that they are not made just for water. Think coffee, hot tea, wine, iced tea. Also, it is just as easy to reach for the healthy glass option versus plastic when you are are home.

Benefits of Drinking from Stainless Steel

  • It is eco-friendly. Yes, a good stainless steel bottle or cup will last you for YEARS.
  • Stainless steel is very durable so it is great to take with you on the go.
  • It keeps your cold drinks cold and your hot drinks hot for hours.
  • Sweat proof. You don’t have to worry about rings on your furniture or countertops.

Benefits of Drinking from Glass

  • Glass is an inert and impermeable material. There is no risk of chemicals getting into liquids or foods that are in glass. (Remember that when at the grocery store.)
  • Glass is easy to clean and sterilize
  • It is environmentally friendly and can be recycled.

Stainless Steel and Glass That I Use the Most

I will be honest. There are a few types that I use on the regular. The first three are by Seriously Ice Cold. They were kind enough to gift me with some of their latest colors and designs this season. You can purchase them on their website at https://www.siccups.com/ and use code SASFORSHORT for 10% off. Love that they are a business located in a neighboring state to where I live.

27 ounce bottle – great for the gym and road trips

20 ounce tumbler – great when I am running errands

Stemless tumbler – great for cocktails or wine

Glass tumbler – this is usually on my desk.

    1. When I learned about the E3 levels I didn’t think twice. Mark still likes his plastic Tervis tumblers.
