Ah, there is nothing better than a day that has a med spa appointment included. Taking care of my skin is a priority for me. I am religious about my daily skincare routine, wearing SPF, and moisturizing face masks. What I have found as I age is that my skin needs a little more than that to keep it looking its best. Microneedling treatment is something that I have done from time to time. This treatment gives my skin that little extra oomph it needs to keep that collagen production going.
There are so many different things that we can do to keep our skin looking its best. It can be confusing. Sometimes I think you just have to try a few different things to see what it takes to get the results that you want. For me, it is a combination of things. Microneedling treatment is a good complement to other things that I have done in the past and what I do daily.

Microneedling Treatment: My Recent Experience
My recent experience at MadEmEl Medical Aesthetics included microneedling of my face and neck. That day I was working with their team to create content for their social media and website. So basically, I was working as a model for the spa. In exchange for that, they provided me with a microneedling treatment.
I had done microneedling before, but it had been a while. I was very curious to see how the latest technology would help to improve my skin. All of my opinions about the treatment are my own so keep reading to see if this is something that I plan to continue doing on my quest to age gracefully.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure. It creates micropunctures in your skin with tiny little needles to produce collagen. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, the skin’s healing process after microneedling treatment can reduce the appearance of scars and dark spots and improve skin elasticity.
This treatment is also referred to as a “collagen induction” procedure.
Benefits of The Treatment
Microneedling can help with many different skin concerns. That, combined with the fact that it is minimally invasive and practically no downtime, is a popular option for many people. Here are some of the concerns that it can help you address:
- Acne scars
- Dark spots
- Large pores
- Sagging skin
- Stretch marks
- Uneven skin texture and tone
- Wrinkles and fine lines
Why I Chose To Add Microneedling Treatment To My Anti-Aging Routine
As I mentioned earlier I have injectables and fillers. In the summer of 2023 I also had the Sofwave treatment done. That treatment went deep into the skin to stimulate collagen production. Microneedling is a good complement to the other parts of my anti-aging regimen because it addresses the fine lines and wrinkles in a slightly different way than the Sofwave did. This makes it so that all three work together to give my skin the best texture and glow.
How I Prepared
Any time that I am having something done I scale back my skincare routine a bit for at least a week. I discontinue the prescription Retin A that I use and the Vitamin C. I just use my moisturizers and eye creams. That way my skin is just nice and moisturized prior to treatment.
The procedure took less than and hour from start to finish. The room at MadEmEl Med Spa was so relaxing to set the tone for my treatment. The aesthetician cleaned my skin thoroughly and assessed my skin. Then we went to work on my face and neck. She did three rounds to each area to make sure that I would get great collagen stimulation from the treatment.
Once we finished with the microneedling, she put a sheet mask on my face to calm my skin. Then used ice rollers that massaged my skin to bring down the redness and inflammation from the treatment. That felt heavenly and was a wonderful finishing touch to the treatment.
My After Microneedling Care
The aesthetician gave me a small tube of calming ointment that I was to use for the next few days. I applied that at least twice a day or as needed. The next day I did not put any makeup on my skin. Just the cream and sunscreen.
The downtime from this treatment was nonexistent. I was fine to be seen the day after. If I had taken “after” photos you would not have been able to tell that I had had anything done.
Would I Do It Again?
Most definitely. This treatment left me with no downtime. I forgot to take after photos because you couldn’t tell that I had had anything done to my face the next morning. The skin on my face and neck felt and looked so refreshed after the microneedling treatment.
This treatment is a great complement to all of the other things that I do to keep my collagen products strong and healthy. So it is not only my skincare routine, and my use of injectables and fillers, but I also make sure that I use collagen peptides in my hot tea daily. My motto is to use multiple avenues to keep my skin looking the way I want it to look.
