How to Keep Your Mascara Looking Its Best: Mascara Tips That Work
Mascara is one of those products that most women consider an essential. Yes, a little mascara can instantly make our eyes appear wider and more awake. Now what woman doesn’t want that even on her most rested days. So how do we accomplish that so that it lasts all day long.
Why mascara Doesn’t last all day long?
It’s not always the mascara. Yep. If you are having problems with your mascara flaking or melting under your eyes, then you need to try these tips and see if it helps.
Tweak your Eye Cream Routine
Ok, I am not saying that it is the eye cream of your choice. It could be; however, here are a couple of things to try.
- Don’t use as much eye cream. Yes, a little goes a LONG way with most eye creams.
- Wait longer between applying your eye cream and mascara. You want to make sure it is completely absorbed into the skin.
- Don’t apply it too close to your lashes. Apply it only under your eyes and on the ocular ridge.
Try Applying Mascara Differently
We all get into habits or ruts when it comes to life in general. This can apply to our makeup routines too. One of the best things to remember is that you should always coat your lashes from the base upward.

Mascara Tips for Applications that Last Longer
Well, our goal is to make our mascara look as fresh on our faces at the end of the day as it did when we first applied it in the morning. Here are a few steps that I find help achieve that goal.
Cleanse your face and lashes
We know that cleansing in the morning is just as important as cleansing in the evening. In the morning we just need to make sure that anything that could have accumulated on our skin while we slept is washed away so that we have a clean slate. It is important to also make sure that there is no trace of mascara on your lashes from the day before. It is important to wash away all makeup and mascara at night. Yes, make sure that you remove all of your mascara every night before bed.
My favorite cleanser for day and night is Fresh Soy Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It acts as a cleanser and eye makeup remover. It is gentle on my skin and my skin feels clean and not stripped after each use. I just like to use my hands or a very soft bamboo washcloth to make sure that I get my skin very clean. I also like to take these disposable towels with me when I travel or use them after skin treatments.
You can find the cleanser at Sephora, Ulta, or Amazon.
Apply eye cream and other face creams
Apply your eye cream and other face creams/serums and give them plenty of time to dry before putting on your mascara. This is key to keeping your mascara looking its best all day long. You can check out my post on choosing the best eye cream for your eyes. My dermatologist and aesthetician were so kind to help me put that post together so that you have a complete guide of things to consider before purchasing eye cream.
Curl your lashes
Curling your lashes will help to make them look longer and your eyes will look much more open once your mascara is applied. I have been using this award-winning brand of eyelash curler for over 10 years. It works like a charm every time. I just try to count to 10 while my lashes are in the curler. What’s nice is that it will last you for years because you can replace the silicone rubber pads when they start to wear down or get sticky.
Recently I also started using this heated eyelash curler. If I have time in my day for the extra steps and a wanting my eyes to look AMAZING then I use this curler after I put my mascara on. It does the trick and makes my eyes pop even more.
To Prime or Not to Prime
Mascara primer is a conditioning lash treatment that will help lengthen and add volume to your lashes prior to applying your favorite mascara.
If you prefer to use clean beauty mascara and eye products then I would suggest you try this primer by Tarte. It does the trick and works well with clean mascaras. You can find it at Sephora or Ulta.
The other primer that I have used in the past and has won accolades for years is the LancomeCils Booster. You can find it at Nordstrom, Sephora, or Amazon.
Apply Mascara Correctly
Now it’s time to apply your favorite mascara. Remember to look up and put the wand at the base of your lashes. You need to wiggle it back and forth just a little to get the base of your lashes. Pull the wand upwards to the tips of your lashes. You want to make sure that you cover the entire last. Wait a bit and then put a second or even third coat on to get the desired look that you want.
Dust Under Your Eyes
Now if you have oily skin and feel the need to dust under your eyes so that you don’t get smearing and smudging make sure that you are dusting. The last thing that you want is for your undereye area to look cakey. Also as we age, that powder can bunch up in our fine lines and make them look even more prominent.
A great powder that is known for its brightening is It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Airbrush Loose Setting Powder. Their products are about more than just cosmetics. All of their products are formulated by plastic surgeons and approved by dermatologists. You can find it at Sephora or Ulta.
Another favorite setting powder of many women is Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder. It has been years since I have used this powder, but I remember my skin used to feel amazing and silky after just a light dusting. It just takes a small amount. You can find it at Nordstrom or Sephora.
When Should You Replace Your Mascara
Mascara, like any beauty product, has to be replaced. You may not see an expiration date on the tube, but that doesn’t mean that you use it until nothing comes out. Typically the rule of thumb for mascara is to replace it every three months. You can think of it as every quarter or every season if that makes it easier.
Here are a few signs that you need to replace it.
- it is thicker than when you first bought it
- when you open the tube it is dried out
- it’s clumpy when you try to put it on
- the smell isn’t like it was
Mascara is something that you definitely want to keep fresh since it is something that you put right up next to your eyes. Eye infections are not a fun thing to get and an expired tube of mascara can be an infection waiting to happen.
