Casual Spring Dresses, Where To Find The Good Ones
With the blooms and blossoms of spring come wearing casual spring dresses. There is nothing better than putting on a dress you feel great in for truly effortless style.
What’s great about spring and summer dresses is that there are so many styles you are sure to find one that fits your personal style and personality. Living in the South, I find that dresses are the coolest thing to wear once the heat and humidity kick in. So now I’m going to share some great dresses and dress styles for your casual spring looks.

Casual Spring Dresses You Will Reach for Again and Again
Isn’t that the kind of dress that you just love to have in your closet? One that is so comfortable that you want to wear every chance you get. The other thing I look for in casual spring dresses is that I can wear them with a variety of shoes. Dresses that go with flats, platform sandals, and sneakers.
Many women my age (midlife) aren’t as comfortable with dresses and sneakers as younger generations, but once you get used to the combination you will love it. I does take the right kind of sneakers and you can read about my favorites to pair with dresses.
Spring Dresses to Wear Now and Into Summer
Casual spring dresses made of breathable, lightweight fabrics are always the preferred choices. I know that it can be a pain to keep cotton and other natural fabrics looking crisp and wrinkle free, but sometimes we just need to embrace that. One way I do that is by keeping this little iron/steamer combo at the ready once the weather turns warm. No more dragging out the big ironing board. This little baby does the trick.
I love a comfortably easy, breezy dress when the weather gets warm. Throw on a pair of sandals or white sneakers and you are off to the races for the day. Fabric that doesn’t show sweat or that dries quickly is always a good thing to look for. Once that summer humidity sets in you will be glad you looked for that feature. Here are some great dresses for this type of pulled together everyday look.
Day to Night Dress

The “day to night” dress term has been around for year now. It is a a dress that you could wear from desk to cocktails. Well, work dress codes have changed quite a bit since the 1980s. The term is still around because this type of dress is so versatile.
The premise is still the same. Swap out your accessories and shoes and the dress takes on a completely different look. It is always good to have one of these hanging in the closet that you feel great in day or night. So when you buy one, just play with the accessories. These are always great to have when you are traveling, even for pleasure.
This mini dress is regular sizing, but because of the design, it fits in the shoulders and sleeve length. Also, I like this length on my short legs. Just above my knees. If I am going out in the evening, I just swap up a shoulder bag for a clutch and throw on some great statement earrings and I am ready to go. Oh, what I love about this dress is that it is a style the brand makes every season and in several solids, florals, and patterns.
Denim Dress

A denim dress is a closet staple. They can be worn year round depending upon the style you choose. You can find them in sleeveless, short-sleeve, and long sleeve styles. They pair easily with so many styles of shoes.
This denim mini dress is a very casual look and has pockets. I realize that this dress might be a bit short for some of you so here are a few other denim dresses that might catch your eye to add to your spring wardrobe.
Maxi Dress

A flowy maxi dress is just that. Easy, breezy dressing. Every woman needs to own this maxi dress. It comes in handy for almost any occasion. The design checks all of the boxes. A nice short sleeve that is loose, a flattering V-neck, fitted waist, and a flowy bottom that is not overwhelming.
The dress is available in petite and regular sizing. I am wearing the PXXS. Anthropologie keeps this dress in stock year round. You can find it in solids and beautiful prints. If you are new to wearing maxi dresses, I would suggest starting with a solid. That is what I did to learn that this silhouette does not overwhelm my petite frame.
Mini Dress

Yes, this little dress checked two boxes for me. I do love a mini dress. To me it is like wearing a pair of shorts. I just make sure I don’t wear them on a windy day if they have a fuller skirt. This little dress comes in so many fun patterns and prints. When I wear a mini dress I make sure that I either wear it with a flat sandal or sneakers to keep it more casual.
I think that this version of the dress with strawberries is just so fun. If you love bright florals this one would be adorable with white sneakers or sandals.
Shirt Dresses

Shirt dresses are so versatile. They can be casual with flats or sandals or dressed up with a wedge during warm weather. This style of dress is available in various styles to compliment all body types. Trust me, you can find a style that looks great on your body. Once you find it, you will know and wear it on repeat.
The cap sleeve zippered shirt dress that I am wearing above is so comfortable. It is a great midi length, but is not overwhelming for my petite body. The white cotton poplin is so crisp for those warmer days. Also available in other solids as well as patterns.
Tshirt/Errand Running Dresses

A t-shirt dress with details. Oh, how I love you. This t-shirt dress is from one of my favorite petite friendly brands. They make this dress in solids and patterns. My pattern is from a previous season, but they always have fresh new patterns out every spring. The dress also comes in solids. I am loving the coral for this spring. This t-shirt dress also comes in a long version that I believe would be a maxi dress on someone petite.
One thing about t-shirt dresses is that you have to make sure the fabric is thick enough so every lump and bump doesn’t show. This fabric is the perfect weight. Not too thick, but not too thin.
Floral Dresses
Spring and floral dresses go hand in hand. Whether you like a small, delicate floral or something bold and bright you can always find them. Here are a couple that caught my eye for this season.

Pastel Dresses
Pastel dresses are always a seasonal favorite when the weather starts to warm up. They always make you think of sunny days.

Where To Shop For Great Spring Dresses
I am just going to be honest. Finding dresses in store is not something that I have much luck with as a petite. Letting my fingers do the scrolling and adding to cart just seems easier these days. Most websites even have the ability for you to search dresses by type such as day dress, casual, cocktail, etc. which makes it even easier. That why I always swear by knowing your measurements and shopping that way. I even wrote a blog post about it that you can read here. You can just order in a few to try and what doesn’t work, just send back.
So where are some my favorite places to shop for casual spring dresses:
- Tuckernuck
- Nordstrom
- Bloomingdales
- Lands’ End
- Dillard’s (Antonio Melani store brand)
- Draper James
- J.Crew
They always have a great selection in a wide variety of price points. That is something else I love about shopping online for anything is that you can set your pricepoint so that you are not tempted by something that is out of your price range.
