Body Butter vs. Body Lotion – Which One Is For You?

Oh, so many choices. Going down the skincare aisle in-store or online can be so overwhelming. How do you know what is the best choice for your skin? You can’t open a jar and smear it on your arm to see how you like it. There are so many factors. The texture, how it goes into your skin, and the SMELL. The other issue is what is in the product. Is it a “clean” product or does it have ingredients you have no idea what they are?

I am always trying new products to see what I like. Guess I am always in search of that “holy grail” favorite. My skincare and body care routine is always evolving. As I age, I find that my skin needs more nourishment than when I was younger. Also, I am now on how I can prevent signs of aging in my skin mode. Our skin is our largest organ and works hard so taking care of it is a priority.

Body butter and body lotion are both part of my body care routine. So let’s see why I like to use a combination of the two to take care of my skin.

What Is Body Butter

Body butter is a type of hydrating cream for the skin that is richer than body lotion. It is referred to as butter because the consistency of the product is similar to butter. The base for this type of formula is usually shae butter or coco butter.

Shae butter is a seed fat that comes from the shae tree. Once it is harvested and processed it becomes an emollient that is good for skin. Coco butter is a fat that comes from the cocoa bean. So when you are looking for the body butter of your dreams make sure that the main ingredient is one of these two natural butters.

Why It Is Good To Use

Body butter is good to use for hydrating your skin. It is especially good for people who have dry skin. It will go on thicker and take a little more massaging into the skin, but it is worth it.

When and Where You Should Use Body Butter

You can use body butter on your skin when it is damp just after a shower or at night. Some body butter formulas will make the skin feel a little greasy so you may want to put them on at night so that your skin recovers while you rest and relax. A thicker moisturizer like this is great to use in the colder months when we have less humidity in the air around us.

You can use body butter from the neck down. Areas that you may want to concentrate on are your elbows, knees, and feet. Those areas tend to bear the brunt of dry skin. I also like to use body butter on areas of my body where the creepy skin can set in. So think about the back sides of your upper arms, your inner thighs, and your tummy.

Body Butter To consider for Your Skin

Body butter can be found at all price points. That is the tough part. Which one is best? Clean beauty brands are typically more expensive. Are they better than others? Depends upon what is important to you. Try a couple and see.

Two brands that are known by everyone for basic skincare are Nivea and Vaseline. Each has a highly-rated body butter. If you don’t need to use a heavy-duty moisturizer often, then you might want to keep one of these in your bathroom. If you prefer clean brands, then you might want to consider Osea or Caudalie. Both body butter are made by companies that are clean beauty skincare companies. So think of them as clean skincare meets body care.

What Is Body Lotion

Body lotion is a moisturizer that is of normal thickness. That is why you can get body lotions in pump dispensers versus in a jar. Body lotion is usually water-based versus oil-based like body butter. Body lotion can contain many other beneficial ingredients like aloe and SPF. So if your skin has a “special need” you can look for the ingredient that you prefer.

Why It Is Good To Use

Body lotion like body butter protects our natural skin barrier. Our bodies are stripped of their natural oils every day from the environment and even our beloved hot showers and baths. So using a good body lotion is important to protect that skin barrier. Keeping the skin moisturized is what makes it look good and decreases the wrinkles and signs of aging.

When and Where You Should Use Body Butter

You can use body lotion morning, noon, and night from the neck down. Since lotions are easier to absorb you don’t have to worry about any greasy feeling on your skin transferring to your clothing.

Body Lotions To Consider For Your Skin

Again, body lotions like body butter can be found at all price points. My most used body lotion is CeraVe. My dermatologist always recommends their products. Nivea is another great brand that you can find everywhere. Both CeraVe and Nivea will have body lotions that have specific formulas for tightening or for rough and bumpy skin. First Aid Beauty is a brand that is known for its products for sensitive skin. Necessaire makes wonderful clean lotions for the body.

So many choices with so many special ingredients. You just have to find what you like and what works for your body.
