Best Natural Remedies for Cold: Let’s Stay Healthy This Winter

natural remedies for cold

Having a cold, cough, flu, bronchitis, or whatever is going around is never fun. For some reason, my body just can’t fight off a cold every year. It usually happens around the holidays too. Anyone else relate? Well, I always turn to natural remedies whenever possible. My body and OTC drugs just do not jive for some reason. I usually end up with a very upset tummy. So I thought I would share some of my go to natural remedies that work for me. I am not a doctor or medical professional of any sort, so always check with someone that is before you take something new.

We all know that staying hydrated, getting lots of rest, and eating yummy chicken soup always makes a cold or virus or any sort better. If I don’t have all of the ingredient for this chicken soup recipe, then I send Mark with a very detailed list to the store. I think it’s the chicken thighs that make this soup so tasty.

So before we dive into the natural remedies that work for me when I have a cold or virus here are some other posts that you might like and that will come in handy if you are not feeling well.

Natural Remedies

So why natural remedies versus OTC? Honestly, I really like to know what I am putting into my body. Yes, I am a label reader. Once I read labels, then I look into what I am taking and why it works. You know the sayin “you are what you eat”. Well, that goes for all the stuff we put into our bodies. Over the years I have learned that my body prefers natural ingredients versus chemicals and additives. That applies to food and anything else that I ingest like OTC medicine.

So, I try to stay as healthy as possible. Who really has the time to not feel well. I know I don’t so there are several things I do to be proactive especially in the colder months.

Preventatives

Yes there are a few things that I do every day to try to keep colds and any other pesky viruses at bay.

Daily Vitamins

I religiously take Vitamin C every morning. Over the years I have tried different ones and most recently I have been taking this Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C. I take it like a shot in a little bit of water every morning. For me, I just feel like my body absorbs it better than a regular capsule form. My doctor also recommends that I take Vitamin D3 and Zinc just to keep my immune system humming along.

My Favorite Drink to Start the Day

I swear by this concoction EVERY morning. I think that I have been drinking this combination for at least six or seven years now. Not only does it provide me with lots of vitamins and minerals, but it also gives me a boost of energy. Yes, it is the first thing that goes into my body. I even take most of the ingredients with me when I travel in baggies stuffed into a small shaker bottle.

My drink is made up of four ingredients, mixed in a shaker bottle with 16 ounces of cold water. I drink all of it every morning before I eat or drink anything else.

Now to share my favorite flavor combinations for the morning drink. I like the Blackberry and Tangerine Fruits and Greens combined with the Orange Ultima. My other favorite combination is Berry Fruits and Greens with Ultima Blue Rapsberry.

My Boost When I Think I’m Getting Sick

You know those days when you start to feel a tickle in your throat or you sneeze a few times. We all have them. This little bottle of herbs, Kick Ass Immune, give me an extra little boost. Now if you haven’t taken liquid herbs before, then be warned. They don’t taste good.

What I do is have a small glass for the herbs in water and then another with a shooter of orange juice. Works like a charm to get rid of the taste.

Preventative to Travel With You

Since the pandemic I think that everyone is more cognizant of when and where we pick up germs. Flying the friendly skies is definitely one of them. This little bottle of Immune Support is easy to tuck into your carry on so that you can give yourself a little boost any time that you are traveling.

My Go Tos When Sick

Sometimes no matter what we do to try to stay healthy a virus just gets us. At that point in time it is time to bring out things to comfort our symptoms while we let the virus run its course.

Tea and Honey

Hot tea just always soothes the throat and warms the body from within for me when I am sick. My favorites for natural cold and flu remedies are Throat Coat tea with honey. Now when it comes to honey some people will swear by Manuka honey and its healing properties while others like this Beekeepers Naturals Superfoods Honey. Others swear by local honey. I have done all three. I think that it is up to your tastebuds to decide which you prefer.

Throat Lozenges

If I am not sipping on hot tea, then I always keep throat lozenges around. Riccola have always been my go to brand and I really like their sugar free lemon mint. When I had bronchitis this winter I discovered these Throat Coat lozenges. They really helped open up my nasal pasages and calm my cough.

Get Over It!!

I think we have all felt this way. Let’s just Get Over It! Whatever is lingering longer we just want to go away. If I have a cold or virus that lingers more than a few days, the I pull out the Get Over It! Yes, this is formulated to help get rid of those things that just want to linger longer. It is a blend of herbs that helps boost the immune system, encourages lymphatic function, and soothes respiratory irritations.

Again, this is not the tastiest concoction to drink. I find that taking it like a shot helps and then I chase it with orange juice.

  1. Once you start reading labels, you realize how much crap is in much of the “normal” stuff.

    1. I know. It’s kind of scary. I don’t know that my cosmetics will ever be 100% clean, but little by little the % is getting higher.
