Simple Tips for Staying Hydrated All Summer Long

It’s that time of year again. You will rarely see me without something to drink in my hand. Sometimes there are even two options going at once. Staying hydrated in the summer is something that I am always trying to stay on top of. The heat and humidity here in Atlanta can be brutal.

People are always asking me how much water I drink and what else I drink so I thought I would break it down for you today and some simple tips for those of you who are not fond of water.

Why Staying Hydrated is So Important

Did you realize that up to 60% of our body is made of water? Now if that doesn’t catch your attention about the importance of water and our bodies I don’t know what will. Water is essential for so many of our bodily functions. It helps with digestion, cushions our joints, stabilizes our heartbeat, prevents constipation, and protects our vital organs. So getting enough water every day is important so that our bodies can function and perform the way that we want them to.

How Much Water Should You Drink

So there is no one size fits all for how much water you should drink. I have looked this up so many times and you can find various answers. Here’s a link to what the Mayo Clinic recommends. Keep in mind that this is a general rule of thumb. There are other factors that you should consider such as your activity level, the climate you live in, your overall health, medications that you take. Depending upon those you may need to increase or decrease your water intake.

I live by the rule of at least 75% of my body weight in ounces of water every day. I have done that for years. Some days I get that much in and many days I get a lot more than that in. It just depends upon my activity levels.

Signs of Dehydration

Dehydration is something that we all should be cognizant of especially in the warmer months. If you are not good about getting your daily intake of water you should look out for the following signs.

  • feeling thirsty
  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • a dry mouth, lips or eyes
  • feeling tired or lethargic
  • not going to the bathroom many times a day
  • dark yellow and strong smelling urine

These are things that you need to watch out for. You can rehydrate yourself with water or with drinks that contain electrolytes. If you have been overheated, then also use a cold compress to your forehead to cool your body. Dehydration is not something that we should take lightly.

My Favorite Way to Get in Extra Water in the Summer

I thought I would share a couple of easy ways that I keep my body super hydrated. Trust me they are tasty and oh so easy to incorporate into your day. I promise that once you get used to it, you will look forward to it.

Early Morning

Every morning I start my day with a shake of powdered greens and electrolytes. I make this shake with 16 ounces of water. Yes, I guzzle the 16 ounces before anything else EVERY morning. It is so tasty and really puts a little extra pep in my step.

Afternoon Pick Me Up

I usually have a glass of water by my side when I am at my desk or if I am in the kitchen. The two most common places to find me at home. If I am out and about, then I usually fill a stainless steel travel cup to take along in the car with me.

My mid afternoon pick me up is an additional scoop of Ultima Replenisher in my glass of water. It gives me something flavorful and a little bit sweet. The other advantage is that it is good for my body.

Ways to Get Water into Your Body if You Don’t Like to Drink Water

I hear from so many people that they get tire of drinking water or they just don’t like it. Adding fresh fruit or mint to your water is one easy way to get some flavor. Here are some other ways that you can easily get more water into your body. Just remember that it is best to get the majority of your water from the real source, but these count too.

  • Eat more water rich fruits and vegetables. Here are some great ones to make sure you incorporate into your daily diet in the summer.
    • Watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, peaches, cantaloupe
    • Cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, celery, tomatoes
  • Drink Iced teas. White and green teas are tasty iced and don’t have as much caffeine. Here’s my favorite green tea and my favorite white tea.
  • Eat cold soups.
  • Drink coconut water. They even come in small containers and different flavors.
