Why Winter Accessories Matter For Petites

They always say that accessories are the “icing on the cake” of any outfit. Now, not every accessory has to be a statement. It’s fine for some to be functional. However, they can be key to elevating your winter look and are a great way to add a little personality while staying warm.

6 Accessories Every Stylish Petite Needs For Cold Weather

When it comes to winter accessories I think that where you live and your lifestyle will play a big part in which accessories you will find yourself reaching for regularly. If you live in a large metropolitan area and find yourself walking a good bit, then your accessories will be different from mine. I am not in the elements much. Living in the suburbs you typically get in your car in the garage, arrive at your destination, and walk a bit in the elements. Once you have done your outing for the day you do the same in reverse.

However, there are times when you need to have great winter accessories no matter where you live. They come in handy when you are traveling, parking garages are not an option, or if you just want to make an impression when you walk in the door. That is why a few select accessories are always great to have in your closet. So let’s find some that will make you look and feel fantastic this winter.

The Perfect Scarf

No matter where you live, a great scarf is a winter staple. The key to the perfect scarf is finding a scarf that not only will keep you warm, but that does not overwhelm your petite frame. So when you are looking for the perfect scarfd here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Lightweight Fabrics: You will want to choose cashmere, a wool blend, or lighter-weight options. Chunky knits can be too bulky.
  • Choose The Right Length: You don’t want a scarf that is too long or too wide. Look for a scarf that is no longer than your thighs when it hangs loosely around your neck.
  • Try A Slim Silhouette: Skinny scarves with tapered ends are a great option. They easily create a streamlined look.
  • Play With Draping: This is when you need to stand in front of a mirror and just play with your scarf. Try draping it a couple of different ways so that you find what looks best on your body.

Here are some great options for scarves. Whether you are looking for a cashmere scarf for a dressier look or a flannel scarf to wear with your favorite puffer jacket.

Hats That Frame Your Face

So many times we think that as a petite we can’t wear hats. However, they are crucial for staying warm when the temperatures plummet and you are outside for an extended time. Plus, they can be such fun to wear. The key is finding one that doesn’t look too large or exaggerated.

Hat Styles That Work For Petites
  • Beanie: A fitted beanie that sits snugly on your head
  • Beret: A classic beret adds a touch of sophistication without adding bulk. This style doesn’t mess up your hair as much either.
  • Cloche: Think of a cloche as a beanie with a bit of pizzazz. This style of hat was popular in the 1940s and oh so chic.

When choosing a hat you want to make sure that you avoid oversized pom-poms or hats that are floppy. Excessive embellishments are also something that can draw too much attention to your look. Keep it simple and snug.

Here are some great hats to consider for this winter.

Gloves That Fit Perfectly

Gloves are not an option when it comes to winter accessories. They are both functional and can make a statement if you want them to. The most important thing about gloves is the fit. They need to “fit your hands like a glove”.

You can match your gloves to your coat or scarf for a more classic look or add something fun like leopard or a print to add a bit of interest.

Tips for Finding Flattering Gloves:

  • Choose Sleek Designs: Leather or cashmere gloves with minimal details are chic and timesless.
  • Fitted Styles: A snug fit for your small hands is a must. They to buy gloves that come in various sizes, not one size fits most.

Here are some great options for keeping your small hands warm this winter whether you are looking for a great pair of fleece gloves to go with your favorite puffer or gloves with some personality.

Statement Belts To Define Your Waist

The thing about winter coats and layers to keep warm is that they can easily hide our figures. Adding a belt that defines your waist can help avoid that issue.

There are two great ways to wear a belt in the winter:

  • Over Your Coat: Yes, you can wear a belt over your winter coat to create an hourglass figure. Try a thin belt like this one and see how you like the look over your favorite coat.
  • With Your Sweaters: Add a skinny belt over long cardigans or sweater dresses. Again, you are defining your waistline.

When it comes to belts it is best to stick with a neutral leather or suede for a classic look. You also want to make sure that they belt it not too wide. I like to stick with belts that are 1.25″ wide or thinner. Otherwise, I feel like they are cutting me in half.

Statement Jewelry That Complements Your Look

In the winter we tend to wear heavier fabrics and layers so that we can stay warm. So when it comes to your accessories you will want to adjust them so that they are not as “heavy” in the colder months.

Jewelry Options That Work With Winter Looks
  • Statement Earrings: Chandelier or drop earrings are a great way to brighten your look without getting lost in the layers.
  • Delicate Necklaces: Longer necklaces are great for elongating the torso and creating that illusional “vneck”. You will want to make sure that the pendants are small and subtle.

One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want to wear too many accessories in the winter. If you are wearing a scarf or high neckline to keep warm, just put on a great pair of earrings. Sometimes less is better especially when we are wearing bulkier clothing.

Here are some great earrings and necklaces to complement your winter looks.

Functional Accessories For Layering

Ok, last but not least are functional accessories for keeping us warm and cozy. Yes, thermal layers are a must if you are out and about when the temps are low and the wind is whipping. This silk long-sleeved crewneck or turtleneck is great for warmth without bulk. You can also get these coordinating silk long underwear pants to keep your legs nice and toasty.

The other functional winter accessories that come in handy are ear muffs and headbands. These are so easy to quickly put on and take off. For quick outings like running to the mailbox or taking out the trash or even a quick walk around the block midday to get your body moving.
