3 Gluten Free, Dairy Free Dishes to Take to a BBQ

Summer is here and that means gathering with friends and family at cookouts and BBQs. As a person who eats gluten free and dairy free 99.5% of the time, I always wonder what is going to be available for me to eat. (yes, I do sneak a bite of goodies from time to time) I always volunteer to bring side dishes. So today I thought I would share 3 easy side dishes to take to a BBQ that everyone will enjoy. You don’t have to tell them that they are dairy free and gluten free.

Those of you who have followed me for a while know that I love to cook and eat. Eating healthy, yet satisfying foods is important to me. I believe that just because you have or choose to eat a certain diet doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on good food. Finding new recipes is something that I love to do and share with friends. My Tips for Eating Healthy at a BBQ

Whenever I get an invitation for any type of gathering where people are bringing dishes I always volunteer to bring a couple of things that I know I can eat. That way I know that I won’t be hungry and pick at things that will upset my tummy later. Here are 3 easy tips to sticking with your healthy eating habits and not look like a picky eater.

  • Bring 1 or 2 healthy sides to share.
  • Load your plate with lean protein and veggies (there’s usually a veggie tray somewhere)
  • Stay hydrated. Bring your own reusable water bottle and refill often.

Now that we have a game plan as to how you can enjoy gathering with friends, let’s look at some of my favorite things to take.

My Favorite Dishes to Take to a BBQ

Classic Deviled Eggs

Who doesn’t enjoy deviled eggs. Not only are they tasty, but they are EASY and inexpensive to take. I do like to make mine look pretty so I fill them using a icing decorator press. Here’s a very tasty recipe that I use all of the time.


Coleslaw is a classic BBQ side. What you have to be careful about is the dressing that goes on it. So many of them contain dairy. I am always asking when I order coleslaw if it has dairy in it. Even if you aren’t dairy free, you might want to avoid dressings that have dairy in them. They can go bad in the heat so quickly.

This recipe for coleslaw made with an Apple Cider Vinegar dressing is so tasty. I make coleslaw pretty much year round and this is one of my very favorite ways to enjoy lots of cabbage.

Strawberry Cobbler

Summer just isn’t summer without fruit cobbler of some sort in my opinion. So many cookouts and BBQs are on holiday weekends so I like to take something in patriotic colors. This strawberry cobbler will not disappoint. You will actually want to make it on repeat to enjoy at home.

Something to Pack

Ok, I do have to admit that I am a bit of a germophobe. If you don’t own something like this, then I would suggest that you add to cart so that you have it for your next invitation. Bugs are just a part of summer heat and humidity. Flies must have one amazing sense of smell because they are always on top of the food table. Doesn’t take two minutes after setting food down that they are circling. These are the best things and easy to take along because they do collapse.

    Oh, thanks I printed the strawberry cobbler recipe because Rob used to always love strawberry shortcake. So this will be a wonderful substitution.
    That’s exactly how I make our slaw now, and it’s fabulous.
