Special Occasion Dresses for Women Over 50: Feeling Beautiful

I don’t know about you, but when we get an invitation to a fancy, schmancy event I get excited. Sometimes I think planning my ensemble is the best part of the event. What’s even better is if I know several months in advance that we are going to something so that I can really take the time to look for the special occasion dresses that are just right.

Actually, I am quite excited to have something to look forward to this fall. I thought now was a good time to start looking around to see what was out in the marketplace that I would fall in love with. Ladies, it’s never too early to start. Am I right? Not only do we have to find the dress, but remember there are accessories that make the ensemble complete. So allow yourself some time.

Today, we are just going to go thru a little process for finding the perfect special occasion dresses. Because when we look great, we feel great and who doesn’t love that feeling.

How to Select the Right Cocktail Dress

Consider the Event

Invitations give us lots of clues as to the vibe and attire of the event. So here are some things to look for before you start shopping.

  • The location of the event. Is it indoors or outdoors?
  • What time is the event?
  • Is it a sit down dinner, cocktails/lite bites (lots of standing), dancing?
  • Is the invitation itself very formal or more casual?
  • Does the invitation include any type of dress code?

Of course, you can also turn to the etiquette guru Emily Post for some guidance on what to wear to different types of soirees. If the invitation does not have a dress code, you may want to reach out to the host/hostess to see if there is one. It’s always nice to be prepared. However, my attitude is that I would rather be overdressed than underdressed any day.

What Type of Dress Are You Comfortable Wearing?

Now that you know what type of event you are going to and have some direction about what people will be wearing you need to determine what you feel comfortable in. We not only want to look good, but we want to be comfortable so that we can enjoy ourselves. If you are like me, I don’t get to play dress up like this often enough. So here are some things to consider:

  • The length of the dress – knee, midi, maxi, or full length
  • The cut of the dress – sheath, fit and flare, full
  • Sleeves or no sleeves. If sleeves, what length

What Color Makes You Feel Great?

Some people always feel most comfortable in wearing black when they are in special occasion dresses especially if it is in the evening. Other colors are just as easy to wear and sometimes are more flattering. You can always keep other neutrals such as navy, brown, or dark green, or grey as possibilities. However, if you like to wear color and that is what makes you feel beautiful, go for it. Just make sure it’s not the same color of the wedding party or the hostess. Don’t want to upstage them.

Can/Would I Wear This Dress Again?

This is a question that I always ask myself when shopping for any type of party dresses or elegant cocktail dresses. Many times they have a pretty hefty price tag so you want to make sure that you love it enough that you can wear it for many years to come. You don’t always see the same people at every event that you attend. Even if you do it is acceptable to wear things again. Frankly, most people won’t remember. That’s the beauty of buying things that you love and knowing the classic lines/style that looks good on your body.

My Favorite Places to Shop for Special Occasion Dresses

Honestly, I shop online 95+% of the time. To me that is just easier. When I do go to stores, they rarely have my size so I find it easier to just order and return. Here are my favorite online sources for special occasion or party dresses.

What Styles Are Out There

Now comes the fun part. Here are some special occasion dresses that caught my eye for various types of events. I tried to keep different body types and preferences in mind when searching. All of my years selling Carlisle taught me the things that women really pay attention to and areas that they like to disguise when possible. Let me know if somethin here catches your eye for your next soiree.

THANKS

As always, thanks for taking the time out of your day to stop by my little corner of the internet. I really do appreciate each and every read. I also love to hear from you so just drop me a line in the comments below if you have a moment to spare. Keep in mind for any type of event that you might want to use a little self tanner. You can read about my favorite clean self tanners here.

Remember to always have a little SASs in your day!

Hugs,

The text that is underlined and shows up in a different color is usually a link to another blog post that I have written, another site, or a product.  The links to a product are affiliate links.  What that means is that if you click on a link to a product and make a purchase, Sassy for Short (a.k.a Beth) gets a small commission at no extra cost to you.  The same goes if you click on any of the pictures to get more information about a product. Also, some items may be gifted to me, but opinions about the products are always my own. I really appreciate you supporting the brands that make it possible for me to keep this blog going!
