How To Stay Warm Without Looking Bulky

Layering is the best way to stay warm and dress for cold weather. Whether you are planning to be outdoors in the cold or indoors where the temperautres are not ideal you want to stay warm. It’s easy to do when you are not dressing to impress. You can easily throw on some fleece and fleece-lined leggings (these are my favorite lounging options or work from home).

Unfortunately, there are days when we have to brave the cold and look nice. So we want to make sure that we have our outfit formula down for looking nice in our everyday or professional clothing without looking bulky. As a petite, I am even more aware of this issue. The last thing that I want is to look fluffier than I am. So here are my tips for layering, staying warm, and not looking bulky. Once you have some of these layers in your winter wardrobe you will be ready to embrace the cold weather.

Stock Up On Base Layers

The first thing that you want to make sure you have is a selection of base layers that fit like a second skin. You can find these in turtlenecks, vnecks and crew neck styles. It is always good to have them in neutral colors as well. I recommend having at least one in black and one in white in your favorite neckline. If you don’t want your base layer to be seen then crew necks and vnecks are the way to go. Need to keep your neck warm, then opt for a turtleneck or mock turtleneck.

This silk long underwear is a great option. It will fit you like a glove and comes in all sizes including petites. You can get a turtleneck top, a crew neck, or a sleeveless tank. This merino wool vneck comes in a fitted or classic fit so it will work for many body types and it is available in multiple color options.

Uniqlo offers some of the best base layer options at resonable pricing. Their proprietary Heattech fabrics are also sustainable. If you are looking for a scoop neck base layer top, this one is the best option I have run across.

Another base layer that is handy to have on hand is fleece lined tights. Yes, you can wear these with skirts and dresses and boots for a stylish winter look. They can also work as a base layer under you slacks.

Choose The Right Materials

When it comes to layering you want to make sure that you choose materials that will breathe and or wick moisture away from your body. The last thing you want to worry about is being a sweaty mess. Base layer fabrics that you want to seek out are:

  • Merino wool
  • Silk
  • Synthetic blends that are moisture-wicking.

Your mid layer fabrics are where your style and fashion comes into play. This is where you can add wool or cashmere sweaters. Tailored cardigans are also a good option. Think knitted or sweater dresses for this layer as well.

Play With Texture

Yes, the objective is to stay warm in cold weather, but that does not mean everything has to be boring. Play with patterns and textures. Many wool sweaters come in beautiful tone on tone patterns. Another great way is to add a scarf. Silk, wook or cashmere scarves not only help to express your personality, but they will also keep your neck warm.

One easy formula for this is to pair a smooth silk or cotton base layer with a chunky knit sweater. Another easy formula is to layer a quilted down vest over a sleek turtleneck. Both looks can be finished with a tailored wool coat for a polished look.

How To Layer Clothes For Warmth

Layering strategically is the key to not looking bulky. This stragtegic layering works whether you are a size 0 or a size 16, short, or tall.

Step 1

You will want to start with a base layer that fits like a glove. Just make sure it’s not too tight. You don’t want to be uncomfortable.

Step 2

Add a mid-layer for insulation. This layer will trap the heat and add minimal bulk to your look of the day. This is the layer where texture and material choices make all the difference. Wool, cashmere, lightweight down vests, and tailored cardigans are great options for your top half.

You can wear wool trousers or denim on the bottom half. Don’t shy away from wool skirts or knitted dresses. You will just want to make sure you layer with tights and boots to keep your legs and feet toasty warm.

Step 3

You will want to top everything off with an outer layer. This layer is what shields you from the elements. You want to invest in coats that are functional and fashionable. It’s always good to have a well-tailored wool coat that is in a classic style. It will provide you with warmth and structure for outfits. A down jackets or parka with a cinched waist is also another must for the winter wardrobe. These will keep you warm and come in water resistant ore water-proof materials for those cold and wet weather days.

Step 4

Don’t forget your winter accessories before heading out the door. A hat, gloves, and a scarf are a must for staying warm and adding a little pizazz to your outfit. To keep your toes toasty warm inside of your favorite boots you will want to wear a pair of merino wool socks or you can even add a wool insole to your shoes or boots.
