Why Every Woman Over 50 Should Have An Anti-Aging Skincare Routine

An anti-aging skincare routine is not something that will give us instant overnight results. What a good routine will do for us is help diminish or slow down the signs of aging. So whether you are vested in your morning and evening routines or just starting realize that your choices of lotions and potions may help slow the hands of time, but they will not stop them. If only there was a cream to do that…..

The other thing that a good routine complements is healthy lifestyle habits that support your largest organ, your skin. Yes, together a good anti-aging skincare routine and healthy lifestyle habits can help you retain your skin’s youthful firmness longer and keep your complexion looking brighter and younger. Another bonus is that it will help with fine lines and wrinkles while reducing your skin cancer risks. All good things in my book.

Let’s look at some skincare tips that you can easily implement into your life.

Anti-Aging Skincare Tips

  • Protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen needs to be your BFF every day. Rain or shine. Broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher is recommended every day before leaving your home. Don’t forget to cover your lips and the backs of your hands with it too. Here are the best tips for applying your sunscreen from the American Academy of Dermatologists. It never hurts to be reminded of the best practices for protecting our skin from sun damage.
  • Use self-tanners. Self-tanners have come a long way in the last several years and you can get so many that don’t streak and will give you that sun-kissed glow that we all love to have in the warmer months.
  • Use moisturizers every day. We aren’t just talking face moisturizers here either. You need to use them on your body, hands, and lips every day as well. It’s not just the skin on our faces that are a telltale sign of our age.
  • Cleanse your face twice a day. Yes. You need to rinse away the grime and toxins from your skin that you are exposed to all day every day.
  • Eat a healthy well-balanced diet and drink more water. A healthy diet and staying hydrated promotes healthy skin.
  • Move your body regularly.
  • Stop smoking if you do smoke. Tobacco is nothing but toxins and they affect the appearance of our skin.
  • Get good sleep. Yes, beauty rest is so important for great skin. When we rest that is when our bodies refresh and renew themselves.

How To Select The Best Skincare Products For You

anti-aging skincare routines products that I use daily

Whether you go shopping in-store or online there are so many anti-aging skincare products out there. How on earth do you know what you should buy. Not only are there so many choices, but there is such a price range. You can get results with products in all price ranges as well. Before we look at the basic products that every routine should include here are a few tips to help you select the best products for you.

  • Buy products formulated for your skin type.
  • Treat the #1 concern that you have for your face. It could be fine lines and wrinkles, or dark spots.
  • Read the labels and make sure that it says hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (doesn’t cause acne).

Five products are the basics for any anti-aging skincare routine. Once you have these products in place there are others that you can add in. These will get you going in the right direction. I am going to share some of my favorite products as examples and you will see that I use a wide variety of brands and pricepoints in my anti-aging skincare routine.

Cleanser

A good cleanser to use on your face every morning and evening is a must. You just want to wash your face with warm weather and a gentle cleanser making sure that you don’t strip it of any natural oils. So look for something gentle, yet effective. For some reason, I like to have a soapy cleanser in the mornings and then at night, I like to have a cold cream type of cleanser. Here are a few options that cycle through.

Toner

Every morning and night after cleansing it’s time to pull out the toner. Toner keeps your skin hydrated, clears out and tightens pores, and rebalances pH levels in your skin. You can also get toners that contain anti-inflammatory qualities which will address problems such as redness.

I love to keep my morning toner in the refrigerator. It feels so good especially in the summer. Here are some great options for toners.

AntiOxidant

Now that we are cleaned and balanced it is time to add an antioxidant to brighten our skin. Yes, this layer will help neutralize free radicals to protect your skin from pollutants and the environment (think sun damage). It will work to help your skin produce more collagen, brighten the skin tone, and make your sunscreen work even better.

This is one layer that I have been playing with lately. I love this product, but it is expensive. What I will say about it is that you use just 3 drops for your entire face so the bottle lasts a long time. I thought I would give this one a try recently and am still figuring out if I will stick with it or go back to the expensive option. This is another option that I have been told is very effective as well.

Sunscreen

The one thing that we have to put on every day, rain or shine. Always look for a broad spectrum that is at least SPF30. There are a few brands that I stick to because they are highly recommended by my dermatologist. I always keep one of these powders in my handbag or beach bag when I know that I am going to be out and about for extended periods of time. They are great for touchups.

Another great thing if you expose your face to the outdoors a lot is a good eye cream that has SPF. I have used this one in the past and really like it because it does come in multiple color options. I also like the applicator. I noticed that this is a new eye product from one of my trusted sunscreen brands.

Last but not least, don’t forget your hands when it comes to sunscreen. This hand cream is great to keep in your handbag or in your car. We get so much sun exposure when we are driving.

Moisturizer

This step is something that we need to include every morning and evening. You will want to find one that targets the concerns that you have for your skin. Anti-aging moisturizing creams are usually packed with antioxidants and brightening agents. They are there to lock in the moisture and help with your skin barrier. Again, this is a product that has such a wide price point. You have to figure out which ones are best for your skin. I tend to like a lighter moisturizer for the daytime underneath my makeup and then a heavy-duty one at night. Actually, one of my favorite daytime moisturizers to use is this nighttime moisturizer. When it is really cold out and the air is dry this moisturizer is a go-to for me. It does the trick and supposedly lasts 24 hours even though I never go that long without cleansing my face.

Here are my current favorite moisturizers for day and night. I change them up every so often depending upon the weather and how big of a moisture drink my skin needs.

Other items to add to your routine

Here are a few other things that you might want to add in to your routine once your skin is accustomed to an anti-aging skincare routine.

  • A gentle exfoliant one or two times a week.
  • Retin A or a Retinol product. I use a prescription Retin A from my dermatologist 4-5 nights a week with moisturizer.
  • Hydrating face mask one or two times a week.
