Best Tops To Wear With Wide Leg Pants To Look Stylish
Wide leg pants are a favorite here on SASforShort. I remember the first pair that I bought. I was so skeptical about trying this style over five years ago and now they are my favorite to wear. Once you find the best tops to wear with wide leg pants on your body type I think you will be reaching for this pants style more often too.
It took me a bit to figure out what tops to wear with wide leg pants as a petite woman. I will tell you that I have spent some time in my closet trying on all sorts of tops with wide leg pants to figure this one out. I have found four styles of tops that work with wide leg pants on shorter frames.

Stylish Tops To Wear With Wide Leg Pants When You Are Short
Winter, spring, summer, or fall you can wear wide leg pants. Yes, they are that versatile of pants style. You can wear them year-round. They pair just as easily with a bootie as they do with a pair of sneakers or sandals. They can be dressy or they can be casual. In my opinion, they are more comfortable than a pair of jeans or a more fitted pant style such as a skinny or straight leg.
When it comes to wide leg pants it is all about proportion. Most of us are used to our formula for balance with more tailored pants since we have been wearing them forever. Now it’s time to find your formula for wearing wide leg pants.
Playing with the styles of tops below I think you will find your new style formula for feeling great when you put on a pair of wide leg pants. Forget those tips from Stacey and Clinton that all of us followed. Times have changed since we watched their show. Loose-fitting and wide leg pants won’t make you look heavier as long as you get your top and bottom proportions in line. So here’s to finding some great tops.
4 Styles Of Tops To Consider
Whether I am styling wide leg pants for something on SASforShort or to wear in my everyday life I find myself gravitating to four styles of tops. Some days I wear my wide leg pants in a dressier or more professional manner. Then other days they are like wearing a pair of jeans and are quite casual. If you are petite and reading this post, you probably have some of these styles of tops in your closet.
They may not go with the pair of wide leg pants that you want to wear. However, disregard the mismatched colors or patterns and look at the proportions of the garments. Try a couple of different pairs of shoes on while you are at it. This is how you can come up with your formula for the best tops to wear with wide leg pants on your body.
When it comes to wide leg pants I always recommend going with a hight waist pant. The reason is that the higher waist will make your legs look longer. All of the tops below are styled with high waisted wide leg pants.
Peplum

The peplum style top is great because it will accentuate your waistline. If you don’t have much of a waistline, then it will help give the illusion of one. Most peplum blouses will be fairly fitted at the top. Then they will flare out at the waist. They are also a great option if you don’t like to tuck your top into your pants.
When adding a peplum top to your closet you will want to make sure that the peplum is in scale with your body. You don’t want it to be a huge peplum or hang too far down. Here are some peplum tops that would be great to wear with wide leg pants.
Classic Button Down

A button down top is always a classic look. It can be a dressier blouse like I am wearing above or it can be a classic blue or white button down. With any type of button down top, you will need to tuck your top into your pants. Otherwise, there is too much volume on top to pair with wide leg pants.
The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens is a brand that all button down lovers should know. Her designs are made for those of us who have gaping issues at the chest. I own the Icon shirt and the Signature shirt. She makes these basic button downs in multiple colors year round. If you have gaping issues, you need to try her shirts. It will be worth it to have the sleeves hemmed if you have short arms.
T-shirt or Polo Shirt

For a casual look, I love pairing an elevated t-shirt with casual wide leg pants. The Colette pants I am wearing above are my go-to pants when I don’t want to wear jeans. You can pair these pants with any of the styles of tops that I am talking about today. They are great high-waisted pants that are very figure-flattering.
When it comes to t-shirts or polo-style shirts you will want to make sure that they have some structure to them. You will also want to tuck them into your pants. You want to look casual yet refined with this type of look.
When it comes to t-shirts Michael Stars is always a favorite. This cowl neck T-shirt would look great with wide leg pants and jeans for an elevated casual look. The fitted waist may be able to sit nicely on top of your pants if you don’t like to tuck in. I also like this T-shirt with wide leg casual pants and jeans. The shoulders just add a little balance to even out the wide leg pants.
Short Sweater

In the fall and winter, a cropped or shorter sweater pairs well with wide leg pants and jeans. If the sweater is fitted to the body you may be able to let it rest on the top of your pants. However, if it is a bit loose or boxy I would suggest doing a front tuck like I did in the photo above.
The Betty cardigan I am wearing is a perfect sweater to wear with wide leg pants or jeans. It can also be worn open as a jacket and then wear a fitted top underneath tucked into your pants. This sweater is a staple piece for Sezane. They not only make it year-round, but it is always available in multiple colors and restocked throughout the season. I am wearing a size XXS. I turn the cuffs back on the sweater and it does not ruin the look of the sweater.
