How To Style High-Wasted Pants

Winter, spring, summer, or fall, high-waisted pants are something that you can reach for and look fantastic when you are walking out the door. This style of pants has been in and out of fashion since the 1930s for women. They had a resurgence in the 1970s and again in the late 2010s. I think that tells us that this style of pants works for women.

One thing I know as a petite person is that this style of pants always makes me feel great. When you feel great in a style, then you should wear it as often as possible. Since high-waisted pants come in so many fabrics and different styles, it means you never grow tired of wearing them. So, let’s dive into how to wear them so that you look and feel great in them.

Who Should Wear High-Waisted Pants?

This is the beauty of high-waisted pants. So many body types can wear them.

  • Petite women: the high waist makes your legs appear long and balances your proportions.
  • Curvy women: they highlight the natural waist and can smooth the hip area.
  • Tall women: they add balance by defining the waistline.
  • Straight or athletic body shapes: create the illusion of curves and shape.

Almost anyone can wear this style of pants. It comes down to choosing the right cut, fabric, and styling for your body type.

What are the Different Types of High-Waisted Pants?

High-waisted pants aren’t a one-size-fits-all piece. They come in so many cuts and silhouettes that there’s a pair for every occasion. The beauty of this is that each style offers its own personality and styling options. So let’s take a look at the most popular style of high-waisted pants and how they can work for your wardrobe.

We know that multiple body types can wear this style of pants; however, I am ranking these styles in terms of how flattering they are for petites. The reason I am doing this is that the right cut high-waisted pants can make all the difference in helping you look taller and more proportioned.

Wide leg high-waisted pants

Linen High Waisted PantsCrepette Fabric version for 3 season pants

This is the best style of high-waisted pants for petites. The high rise elongates your legs when paired with a floor-skimming hem and heels. This combination creates the illusion of long, lean legs.

The linen pants I am wearing above are an easy-to-wear style because they have a comfortable, flattering elastic band in the back of the waist. The flat front is also something that many women prefer. They also come in a crepette fabric that is great for three seasons of the year. Both fabrics are easy to dress up or down and come in several color options.

Straight leg High-Waisted Pants

The style that is a close second for petites is a straight leg high-waisted pant. This style always lengthens without overwhelming a petite frame and works beautifully when you tuck in your top or sweater.

These four-season stretch pants are a favorite of mine and many women who read my posts regularly. They can go from work to a casual weekend look. They are always available in basic colors. I have had mine for several seasons and have them in more than one color in my closet.

High Waisted Jeans

High-waisted jeans are a great everyday staple that will always make your legs look longer. Skinny jeans, straight leg jeans, or wide leg jeans with a high rise are a must for every petite woman. Wear the style and pair of jeans that makes you feel your best. Check out my tips for the best jeans styles for petites to wear if you are searching for a new favorite pair.

The skinny high-rise jeans in the photo are not a petite-sized jean, but they work like a charm because they are a cropped jean. They have the right amount of stretch and are flattering on the back side. They hit right at my belly button, so they are not too high of a rise.

Cropped High-Waisted Pants

This style of pants can be very flattering if the hem hits right above the ankle bone. Pair them with a neutral shoe or a shoe that is slightly darker to avoid chopping the leg line.

The khaki cropped high-waisted pants I am wearing are another great closet staple. They are made season after season by the retailer, so that tells you something about how they sell. Always available in basic neutral colors, but every spring and summer in fun, on-trend colors.

High-Waisted Trousers

Structured trousers are so good on petites when they are tailored properly. Look for cuts that enhance your unique petite frame. Small tweaks from a tailor can make all the difference.

Paperbag Waist Pants

This can be the trickiest style of high-waisted pants for petites to wear. Guess that is why I don’t have a pair in my closet or photography archives. The extra fabric and the self-tie belts can overwhelm a petite frame in the stomach area. If you love this style of pants, choose a slimmer cut and pair them with a fitted top and heels.

How to Wear High-Waisted-Pants

Here are five styling tips for wearing high-waisted pants when you are petite. These will help you look put together no matter the occasion.

  • Tuck it in. Always tuck or half-tuck tops so that you highlight your natural waist.
  • Play with proportions. Pair loose pants with more fitted tops and vice versa. This will keep everything balanced. The more flow to the pants, the more fitted top you want to wear.
  • Use belts. This will accentuate your waist, and add a polished touch to your look. Just remember to keep your belt on the thinner size. I usually go for 1″ or thinner.
  • Shoes matter. Heels will elongate the legs (even a 2″ kitten heel), flats and sneakers keep it casual, and boots can add an edge to the look.
  • Layer smart. Cropped jackets or tailored blazers always look good with high-rise pants.

An ankle-length ponte knit pant is such a versatile pant to have in the closet. The pants are a pull-on pant with a hidden elastic waist, so they are comfortable if you sit a lot.
