How To Establish Holiday Traditions As A Child-Free Couple

I am going to walk you through what holiday traditions are and why they matter. Understanding the meaning and significance can help you appreciate the little rituals that make the season feel special. Then, we will talk about how to create new ones together as a couple and a few ideas to inspire your own list. So, whether you have just decided to be a child-free couple or if you are like us and have been child-free for many years, I hope you will find some ways to make your holiday season sparkle a little more this year.

What is a holiday tradition?

A holiday tradition is a ritual, activity, or shared experience that you and your partner choose to repeat year after year. It can be as simple as enjoying a daily Advent calendar, decorating the tree together with your favorite holiday playlist. Or as elaborate as planning an annual getaway.

What’s great about traditions is that they become little time capsules. Each year when you revisit them, you can reminisce about where you were, how life has changed, and how far you have come together. Traditions also bring us comfort and familiarity. They are something to look forward to, no matter how busy or unpredictable life feels.

When you don’t have children, holiday traditions don’t have to be tied to what is “expected”. It doesn’t have to be about the hustle and bustle and stress of the season, and making things perfect for everyone. Holiday traditions can be opportunities to slow down, connect, and celebrate in ways that reflect who you are as a duo. Let them evolve around what brings you joy and togetherness.

How do holiday traditions bring us together?

Holiday traditions are about more than just activities. They are about creating shared memories and emotional connection. Here are a few ways they can bring a child-free couple together.

They create a sense of belonging

When you build your own rituals, you are creating a little world that belongs to the two of you. It could be cooking a favorite meal, making favorite cookies that remind you of family traditions, or watching a favorite holiday movie. Whatever the shared experience(s) are, they create a feeling of “home and happiness” in your relationship.

They encourage quality time

All of us can easily get swept up in the hustle and bustle of the season. There are always so many fun events, more errands than usual to buy gifts, and many times work and family obligations on top of your normal schedule. Having a few traditions that you put on your calendar gives you built-in moments to slow down and focus on each other. Again, doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. It could be sipping a favorite glass of wine or hot cocoa by the Christmas tree with holiday music playing, or a long walk after dinner to check out Christmas lights in the neighborhood.

They strengthen emotional connection

Traditions can spark nostalgia, gratitude, and laughter. All of the things that help deepen emotional intimacy. Looking back on moments together over the years makes you realize what is important in a relationship. Being present with one another.

On a personal note here, our holiday traditions have really evolved over the years. When we were younger, they were before the holiday because we spent the holidays with family. Now that we are older and no longer have holiday celebrations with family, we have changed things up a bit. So don’t think that the traditions you set now are set in stone. Christmas traditions will unfold and change as you celebrate more holiday seasons together.

How to start new holiday traditions as a child-free couple

There is no better time to start a new holiday tradition than now. Here are a few simple ways that you can begin to build traditions that both of you will look forward to and enjoy.

Reflect on what matters most to both of you

Take some time to think about what makes the season feel joyful. Is it travel? Food? Music? Going to a theatre performance? Time with friends and family? This is a great starting point. Once you come up with a shared priority or priorities, then you can come up with holiday traditions that feel authentic and easy to maintain.

Keep it simple and meaningful

You don’t have to have a long list of extravagant activities. A few thoughtful ones that both of you enjoy will be much more enjoyable year after year. Start small and let them grow as your relationship grows.

Honor your personalities and preferences

Your holiday traditions don’t have to look like everyone else’s. That is the beauty of this. Your traditions are yours, and they should reflect who the two of you are together, not what everyone else does or expects.

What are some holiday traditions to establish as a child-free couple?

Here are five ideas to inspire you as you start your own collection of holiday traditions. I hope they will help you make memories that you will cherish for years to come.

Plan a festive getaway

When you are child-free, you don’t have to worry about school calendars or kids’ schedules to plan around. This is a great time of year to take advantage of quieter times to travel, especially early December. There are so many fun things that you can go and do. Plan a trip to the mountains and stay in a cabin, visit a Christmas market, or head to a city that goes all out with lights and decorations. Or maybe you just want to chill and go to the beach. Do what makes the two of you happy. You can see some places where we like to go for the best vacations for couples.

Host a “favorite things” night

Invite a few close friends for an evening of good food, laughter, and exchanging small gifts. Everyone brings a few of their favorite items (under a set price), and you leave with new treasures and fun memories.

Create a signature holiday meal or cocktail

Maybe it is your version of Christmas Eve dinner for two or a cocktail that you only make during the month of December. This is a great way to kick off the season. Each year, you can tweak your menu and recipes to make it truly your own.

Give back together

There is always an extra need for volunteers during the holiday season. If you have a favorite charity or cause, this can be a very meaningful and fulfilling way to spend some time together during the season.

Have a “just us” celebration night

Plan an evening at the beginning of the holiday season that is just for the two of you to ignite the holiday spirit. It could be a night where you order in or cook a simple meal, have a favorite beverage, and enjoy a quiet evening. It is a great way to center your season around love and gratitude.
