Great Dresses to Wear to a Fall Wedding Over 50

Great Dresses to Wear to a Fall Wedding Over 50
Fall can be just as busy of a wedding season as summer some years. Actually I love to go to a fall wedding. They are usually indoors so you don’t have to worry about the weather. The other thing is that you don’t have to worry about sweating like crazy so you can choose whatever type of fabric your heart desires. Great dresses to wear to a fall wedding can be light and airy or a beautiful brocade that is more winterlike.
One thing is for sure. We always want to look and feel our very best when we go to a wedding. Whether it is for a family member’s wedding or that of a good friend it is always a special occasion. Pluss we usually get to see people that we have not seen for a while.
Sometimes it can be tricky to find just the right dress. We don’t want to buy something that we will wear once and then it hangs in the closet.
As I put this post together I took several things into consideration:
- can the dress easily be worn to another event (change of accessories)
- age appropriate, yet not frumpy
- petite friendly (I am 5’1/2″ so that is always on my mind) You can check out this post on what I look for when you can buy petite sizing.
- if there is dancing involved, will it be comfortable and fun to dance the night away in
So let’s break this down into fall wedding guest dresses for day weddings and evening weddings.

Great Dresses to Wear to a Fall Wedding During the Day
When we think of a fall wedding there is usually a crispness in the air. It’s cool, but not cold. Sleeveless dresses like beautiful floral print or this pink and purple floral jacquard are great options. Both could also be worn for an early spring wedding too.
If you choose to wear a sleeveless dress, then you will want to make sure that you have some sort of wrap that you can easily toss over your shoulder. You could go with a thin gauzy metallic wrap or a silk and cashmere blend wrap. Trust me, you can never have too many of these in your closet. They come in handy more often that you will think and they never go out of style.
If you prefer solids, then this pink dress or this navy dress might be of more interest. Both have sleeves so you wouldn’t have to worry about a wrap. Tone on tone patterns are also a great way to have texture and interest in a dress without being too flashy. This is a great tone on tone patterned dress and the green color is fabulous for fall.
Here are some great options for a daytime or afternoon fall wedding.
Great Dresses for Evening Weddings
When I get a late afternoon or evening wedding invitation I naturally assume that there will be dancing after dinner. That means comfortable shoes and a dress that you can move in. I also look to see if it is going to be black tie or just a dressier event since it is evening.
Dressier Evening Options
Let’s get dressed up, but not too formal. This time of day sleeves (at least short sleeves) are probably a good thing. This floral print jacquard would be a great option. If you prefer solids then this green dress or this evergreeen dress would be stunning. I think that you could easily wear these dresses for holiday events as well. They are understated enough that they don’t scream Christmas party dress.
Black Tie Options
Now let’s look at some sparkle and shine. When the invitation says black tie, then it’s time to pull out all of the stops and wear something spectacular.
Knee Length
If you like neutrals then this metallic knit dress is stunning. This might be one of the dreamiest black dresses I have seen in a long time. The sheer sleeves on this velvet embellished fit and flare dress are the answer to any woman’s request for a dress with sleeves that is not too warm. This deep blue dress is an amazing color for evening and isn’t black. Here are some great options if you prefer a knee length dress for your special occasion.
Full Length
Sometimes it’s nice to don a full length ball gown. I don’t know about you, but for me it is such a treat to do this. There are two brands that I think of for this for midlife women. Sachin + Babi and Mac Duggal both design evening dresses for women who want to look and feel beautiful and have specific body parts covered while doing so. Both brands just has some of the most stunning silhouettes and colors.
Comfortable Shoes
Comfortable shoes are a MUST with your great dresses to wear to a fall wedding. Sarah Flint pumps are by far my choice of heels whenever I am going to be standing for extended periods of time or dancing the night away. What I love about her classic Perfect Pumps is that she offers every color in three different heel heights. Kitten heels, 85 mm (3″) or 100 mm (4″). If you don’t like to wear or can’t wear a traditional pump she also make a lower block heeled pump call the Perfect Emma pump that offers a little more heel stability. For all Sarah Flint Shoes you can use code BABETHF for $50 off your purchase.
