Finding The Perfect Dress To Wear To A Fall Wedding

Sometimes it can be tricky to find just the right dress. We don’t want to buy something that we will wear once and then it hangs in the closet.

  • Can the dress easily be worn to another event (change of accessories)
  • Age-appropriate, yet not frumpy
  • Petite friendly (I am 5’1/2″ so that is always on my mind)
  • If there is dancing involved, will it be comfortable and fun to dance the night away in

So let’s break this down into fall wedding guest dresses for day weddings and evening weddings.

Great Dresses to Wear to a Fall Wedding During the Day

When we think of a fall wedding there is usually a crispness in the air. It’s cool, but not cold. Sleeveless dresses like this solid rust dress or this navy lace dress are great options. The navy could also be worn for an early spring wedding.

If you choose to wear a sleeveless dress, then you will want to make sure that you have some sort of wrap that you can easily toss over your shoulder. You could go with a thin gauzy metallic wrap or a silk and cashmere blend wrap. Trust me, you can never have too many of these in your closet. They come in handy more often that you will think and they never go out of style.

If you prefer a pattern or print, then this pink and red dress or this blue and black may be of more interest. Both have sleeves so you wouldn’t have to worry about a wrap. Tone-on-tone patterns are also a great way to have texture and interest in a dress without being too flashy. This is a great tone on tone patterned dress and the green color is fabulous for fall.

Here are some great options for a daytime or afternoon fall wedding.

Great Dresses for Evening Weddings

When I get a late afternoon or evening wedding invitation I naturally assume that there will be dancing after dinner. That means comfortable shoes and a dress that you can move in. I also look to see if it is going to be black tie or just a dressier event since it is evening.

Dressier Evening Options

Let’s get dressed up, but not too formal. This time of day sleeves (at least short sleeves) are probably a good thing. This green metallic dress would be a great option. If you prefer solids then this purple dress or this textured jacquard dress would be stunning. I think that you could easily wear these dresses for holiday events as well. They are understated enough that they don’t scream Christmas party dress.

Black Tie Options

Now let’s look at some sparkle and shine. When the invitation says black tie, then it’s time to pull out all of the stops and wear something spectacular.

Knee Length

If you like neutrals then this rose gold dress is stunning. This might be one of the most elegant black dresses I have seen in a long time. The sheer sleeves on this velvet embellished fit and flare dress are the answer to any woman’s request for a dress with sleeves that is not too warm. This deep blue dress is an amazing color for evening and isn’t black. Here are some great options if you prefer a knee-length dress for your special occasion.

Full Length

Sometimes it’s nice to don a full-length ball gown. I don’t know about you, but for me, it is such a treat to do this. There are three brands that I think of for this for midlife women. Sachin + Babi, Rickie Freeman Teri Jon, and Mac Duggal. All of them design evening dresses for women who want to look and feel beautiful and have specific body parts covered while doing so. Both brands just have some of the most stunning silhouettes and colors.

Comfortable Shoes

Comfortable shoes are a MUST with your great dresses to wear to a fall wedding. There are two brands that come to mind when I need a heel that is comfortable and classic. Sarah Flint and Ally Shoes are my go-to websites. I can always find a classic pump or a beautiful sandal that will complement what I am planning to wear. What is nice is that both brands make their pumps in various heel heights. It’s always nice to have that option.

For Ally Shoes you can use code BETH10 for 10% off your order.
