How To Find The Best Skirt Lengths For Your Petite Frame
The art of balancing proportions is probably the most important thing for a petite woman to understand. Once you unlock this, choosing wardrobe pieces that look amazing on you suddenly becomes so much easier. I know, sometimes this is easier said than done. There are times I have scrutinized myself and sometimes I call on my seamstress to help me make the final decision. Can you tell I trust this lady?
When you figure out the best skirt lengths for your body you will love wearing them. So let’s see why this garment plays such a big role in balancing proportions.
Why Skirt Length Matters For Petites
Where the hemline of our skirts hits on our legs can make the difference between looking taller or shorter. Since we are petite we want to keep these three things in mind when choosing a skirt.
- Proportion is Everything: The length of your skirt should always complement your height. Shorter skirts will elongate your legs. Many times longer skirts can drown petite frames in fabric if they don’t hit at the right spot.
- Shoes Help with Balance: Skirt length is also about the shoe pairing. Heels, flats, or boots can instantly change how a skirt looks on you. Sometimes just an inch or two of height can make a huge impact on the way a skirt looks.
- Fabric and Fit Matter: We always have to ask if the skirt is overwhelming us because that can happen so easily. Skirts that work best for petites are flowy, fitted, or slightly structured skirts that will move with your body.

4 Tips To Remember For Finding The Perfect Length
Here are four easy tips to remember when you are trying on skirts. Keeping these things in mind will help to ensure you love the way you look in your skirts.
- Go High Waisted: It doesn’t matter the skirt length, a high-waisted style will always be your best bet for making your leg look longer. The high waist draws the eye upward and shortens the torso. This makes you look taller overall.
- Mind the Hemline: You always want to avoid skirts that hit the widest part of your calves or thighs. These lengths can make you look shorter.
- Fabric Choices: Lightweight fabrics that move with your body are always a good choice. Heavier fabrics can make skirts feel stiff and boxy. Not the look we are going for.
- Keep It Simple: Busy patterns or oversized details can easily overwhelm petites. If you do go for a bold pattern, keep the rest simple. I always say to look in the mirror and see if you see yourself first or the outfit first. What we want is for everyone to see you first and the outfit that is enhancing your appearance second.
Skirt Lengths And How To Style Them Perfectly For Petites
Below are the most common skirt styles. I encourage you to try all four styles of skirts. Sometimes we get stuck in our “fashion box” and think that something doesn’t work for us. I promise you that you can wear all four styles of skirts, you just have to style them correctly. Yes, there may be one or two styles you feel more comfortable in and that’s OK. But, sometimes it’s worth trying a new style and new skirt lengths. You just never know. You might fall in love.
Mini Skirts
Mini skirts are a great option for petites because they reveal more leg, which gives the illusion of longer legs. The trick here is to avoid going too short. A mini skirt that is mid-thigh is the sweet spot. I have found that regular-sizing minis skirts are the way to go. They usually hit at that sweet spot.
The black mini skirt that I am wearing in the photo above is just that. Regular sizing and the length is perfect. I also have the same skirt in denim for the summer.

Mini skirts are a great casual day look with short ankle boots or even a heeled loafer. You can wear them in the evening. I love short black skirts in the winter with black tights and knee boots. Just remember with mini skirts you need to tuck in your top so that the proportions are in check.
Knee-Length Skirts
Knee-length skirts are the happy medium for petites who want more coverage but still like to keep their proportions balanced. A knee-length skirt for petites would end an inch or so above the knee or it can skim the top of your knee. You just have to play with the length to get your true sweet spot for this style of skirt. This skirt length works beautifully for workwear or more formal settings.

The outfit in the collage is a perfect example of how a knee-length skirt can look professional and give you the illusion of extra height. The pencil silhouette hugs your curves and the tucked-in top adds waistline definition to make it work together.
Nude pointy pumps are always a petite woman’s best bet for elongating the leg line and work well with pencil skirts. When it comes to nude pumps I recommend checking out Ally Shoes. Their nude pumps come in eight different shades so it is easier to match your skin tone. You can use code BETH10 for 10% off your order. These pumps are comfortable and have a classic design you will have for years to come.
Midi Skirts
Midi skirts can be tricky for petites. However, once you find the sweet spot on your frame you can pull this skirt trend off with no worries. It all comes down to styling. Opt for one that hits mid-calf or just at the bottom of the rounded part of your calf. Pair it with heels to create extra height. A-line or straight cuts work best because they don’t add volume. If you can find one with a slit in the front or to the side that is great. That slit will help draw the eye up and it makes it easier for walking.

This is a great look for date night or a semi-formal event. The skirt adds elegance without overpowering your frame. The fitted top and heels make sure that your silhouette stays sleek and elongated. In the winter months, this is also another great style of skirt to wear with knee boots.
Maxi Skirts
Petites often fear maxi skirts and dresses. However, when done right, they can be very flattering. The key to a flattering maxi skirt is to choose a high-waisted style that grazes the floor when worn with heels. The continuous line makes you look taller. Look for soft, flowy fabrics that drape nicely. Also, keep in mind the size of the patterns. A small pattern or a solid color works best for short girls.

This look exudes effortless elegance. The high waist and longer skirt create a vertical line that elongates your body. The heels will give you a little extra height to keep things balanced.
