Why Columns of Color are a Must Have for a Chic Closet

Why Columns of Color are a Must Have for a Chic Closet

Dressing in columns of color has long been a favorite way of dressing for many women.  In case you aren’t familiar with it, basically it is wearing one shade (monochromatic) from head to toe.  Then you just throw on a topper of some sort in a contrasting shade of color.  Easy peasy dressing that gives the illusion being taller and thinner.  Now what woman doesn’t like the idea of that?  Honestly, I don’t think I have ever met one.

As a petite, monochromatic dressing has always been a way of dressing that I have gravitated to.  Not only is it easy, but it helps my 5′ 1/2″ frame look taller.  I like to follow the latest trends which you can read about here, but I make sure that they work for my petite frame.   An easy way to bring trends into this classic style of dressing is by popping your columns of color with trending colors and patterns.

I have always thought of monochromatic dressing as an easy way to build a classic wardrobe.  It doesn’t mean that your columns have to be classic trousers and pencil skirts on the bottom with a same colored top.  You will see that it can be wide legged pants like I am wearing or even jeans.  The best way to start building your classic wardrobe is to know how to dress your body type.  This article will give you some simple tips.

What Columns of Color Should You Have in Your Closet

Winter, spring, summer or fall…..yes this is an easy way to dress regardless of the time of year.  It doesn’t always have to be business or professional type of clothing.  It can be fun wide-leg ponte knit pants like I am wearing or it can be a great fitting pair of white jeans as the foundation of your column.

The most common colors for monochromatic dressing are:

  • Black
  • Navy
  • Camel

Other colors that you can add over time and that you feel wearing are:

  • White or ivory
  • Charcoal grey or your favorite shade of grey
  • Burgundy
  • Chocolate Brown
  • Dark Green

How to Keep Columns of Color from Looking Boring

Yes, this is an easy way to get dressed.  Fantastic for traveling whether on business or pleasure.   What you have to be careful about it that it doesn’t turn into a boring, unexciting look.  There’s an easy fix for that.

  • Wear drapey cardigan or ponchos versus jackets.
  • Wear patterned or textured wraps that add a little drama.
  • Printed silk scarves at your neck to add color and personality to the look.
  • Multi-colored earrings or necklaces.  Personally I would choose one or the other of these options.
  • Interesting colored handbags.  Think yellow, orange, or even multicolored.

Thanks

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this post.  I hope this helps offers up some ideas about how to make getting dressed easier and colorful for you.

Remember to always have a little SASs in your day.

Dressing in columns of color have been a favorite of mine too- even though I’m tall. A monochromatic look just adds that touch of elegance and class to any ensemble.
